Conducting a Well-Rounded Job Search

It's important to utilize different job search techniques in your hunt for a new job. Although some are more effective than others, it may depend on your own situation as to what will work best for you.
In a world where spending time online is the norm, it’s almost impossible to think of handling business any other way – this includes conducting a job search. However, many experts will agree that while the Internet provides a wide variety of options for finding employment, it shouldn’t be the only way.

In other words, a job search should be well rounded. It should include the Internet as well as other traditional methods of job seeking. So before you start or continue your search, let’s take a look at how you can go about conducting a well-rounded job search.

Networking is Key

It’s no secret that one of the most effective ways to get your foot in the door of any company you’re interested in is through employee referral. The reason why is because you already have someone vouching for you to let the employer know you can do the work – less research for them. So if you already have a friend or family member working for a company of interest, or have met someone through networking and created enough of a bond to get the referral you need, it’s good to utilize them as a source.

Now you may be thinking, "Oh! I can utilize my online social networking skills in this arena!" Well, this is true; however, you don’t want to rely solely on this as a way to network. Old-fashioned networking – getting out to functions and actually shaking hands - is often times more effective. You can make a greater impression on the potential referrer by showing your charm and professionalism in person.

Try Temping

Another great way to conduct your job search is by making contact with companies through temp inquiries. Again, this usually requires you directly contacting a company’s human resources department to see if they might need someone to come in and work on a temporary basis.

You may also be able to get this done through a temp agency; however many employers would rather not use them because they have to give a finder’s fee to the temp agency to hire you permanently. Either way, whatever route you take to get your foot in the door as a temporary employee is a good one for helping you learn the ins and outs of the company, as well as put you in a good position with the right people at the top.

It’s Okay to Take Advantage of the Internet

Of course, the Internet is a great place to take advantage of more than seemingly anonymous job boards. By using your Twitter and Facebook accounts, as well as making sure you’re highly searchable in Google and other search engines, you can easily network from home. You just don’t want to make this your only form of job seeking.

When you’re conducting a job search, the last thing you want is to fail to cover as many bases as possible. So whether you’re networking online or offline, cold-calling, sending resumes blindly, applying for temp positions, or going about your search through online job boards, you don’t want to choose one too heavily over the other. Searching for a job is a job within itself. If you make it a well-rounded search, you’ll be on your way to securing a great job in no time.
