To understand the job of a computer operator it is essential to understand how a centralized computer system network functions. In a network small employee terminals equipped with a monitor and keyboard are connected to the core system that contains all the software memory. Hence operators are required to work with most types of mainframes, and networks of personal computers. In some organizations an operator will also work on minicomputers which are not connected to the network.
The duties of the computer operator vary according to the systems they are working with. One of the most important things that they do is maintaining the hardware. They will keep a lookout for any indication of system failures and take preemptive action. Sometimes, employees will report trouble in the system and the operator will have to respond immediately to solve the problem.
If major malfunction is discovered which might require replacing expensive parts they will have to notify the supervisor. They will also maintain records of system run time, errors encountered and action taken along with the response time for the action. Other things that they look into are analyzing console instructions and monitor, keyboard connectivity.
They will also undertake routine maintenance of the computer hardware equipment and replace or repair any faulty parts. The computer operator will also install basic software necessary for operating the system. Configuring systems to suit individual needs and connecting them to peripherals like printers, scanners, etc is also a part of the computer operator duties.
Another important aspect of their job profile is to put in security measures in the system to ward off computer virus problems. Installing software or upgrading it so each terminal enables the employees to get optimum functioning time. They also need to be proficient with knowledge about local area networks (LAN), data communications equipment, and related software.
Education and Salary
Businesses will have different eligibility criteria for the profile of a computer operator, some are comfortable hiring high school diploma holders while others look for a bachelor's degree. To get gainful employment it is advisable to get at least an Associate degree in a computer related field. Many colleges and universities offer computer science programs which prove helpful in gaining knowledge and employment. Exploring community colleges and vocational training schools for formal computer training and acquiring specialization in a specific routine or equipment is also a good way to ensure gainful employment.
The salary of a computer operator will depend on the job profile and the specialization if any. Other factors that affect the salary are, location of the job and the experience of the candidate. According to national statistics the average, computer operator salary ranges anywhere between USD 25,000 to USD 45,000 per year. In some places like California computer operator salaries are known to touch the USD 70,000 per year mark. Market analysts believe that the job prospects for this profession in the coming years are going to be great.
Individuals with extensive knowledge in computer hardware and general computer procedures, along with basic software know how will do well in this profession. Personal qualities like communication skills and ability to multitask are crucial for success and attention to detail are some of the career requirements for the computer operator job profile.
