Educational Requirements
If you are aspiring to become a computer hardware engineer, it is necessary to complete the four-year degree in computer engineering or electrical engineering. For certain fields, having a master's degree is the basic requirement. Master's degree can help you to specialize in a certain field and will give you an edge over others in the market. You should have the knowledge of hardware devices like processors, electronic circuits, computer equipment and computer programming.
Mathematics is one of the essential subjects and includes calculus, geometry and algebra. English reading is also important to understand the content and the meaning of words to read correctly the datasheets and manuals that are related to the computer equipment. Designing the computer hardware using special tools, including both software and hardware tools, is one of the crucial tasks the computer hardware engineer should know. Lastly, a basic knowledge of the management and administration is necessary, comprising skills like strategic planning, resource management, leadership techniques and other managerial skills.
Skills and Ability Requirements
Developing the right skills, is the next important step. The skill-set includes a good programming ability, scientific problem solving ability, understanding and troubleshooting a problem, logical reasoning and approaching the problems to find an appropriate solution to the problem. Understanding the paragraphs and reading comprehensions that are related to the computer hardware and software is also included in the skill set. Excellent communication skills and writing ability, with a proper information ordering ability, is required for the job.
Job Activities
The computer hardware engineer is required to interact with the computer hardware and software. The data and process information should always be noted by him. He needs to have good communication skills and provide consultation to the team members or the management. Drafting and making layouts with some creativity, is necessary to design the computer peripherals. Data analysis and updating relevant knowledge related to the hardware and software installation is important. He should always keep himself updated by interacting with people inside and outside the organization.
He must always be keen to analyze and assess the information and product prototypes and market requirements. The product prototypes are tested and modified using physical models and simulation software available. The cost constraint must be considered while designing and developing the hardware. The computer peripherals and support units like microprocessors, control units, logic used and performance improvements are to be studied thoroughly by him. The data related to the design and development must be well-documented so as to evaluate the functioning ability if the circuit or peripheral. Once the documentation and prototyping of the product is done, he sends the product for manufacturing. He must provide the power supply requirements, system dimensions, tested results and the hardware or software prototype of the product to the manufacturing department. When the product is ready, he needs to assemble the product and install it in order to test the product. Testing the product under certain conditions is also one of his key responsibilities.
The computer hardware engineer has to work for 40 hours per week, and is responsible for the rapid development in the field of computers, which is progressing everyday.
