Comparing Cancun and Riviera Maya at a Glimpse

It can be difficult choosing the vacation hot spot that is going to meet your travel expectations. One difficulty many travelers come across is choosing between the Cancun and Riviera Maya areas in Mexico. Travel Specialists are typically the best at describing these resort areas and matching them to the needs of their travelers.
With over 150 resorts to choose from along the beaches of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico (not even counting the neighboring island of Cozumel), it’s hard to imagine it’s easy for a traveler new to this area to choose a resort for their vacation.

To start, Cancun and the Riviera Maya are two very different areas. The Riviera Maya region is just south of Cancun along the coast. Vacationers going to both destinations fly into the Cancun International Airport, but from their many split to vacationing in the two different areas. You can’t forget that there are also multiple towns in the Riviera Maya area that offer different vacation experiences as well. Between Puerto Adventuras, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Puerto Morelos, the resort options are near endless.

A vast majority of resorts in this area are All-Inclusive, meaning all meals, drinks and tips are included. Many travelers to this region purchase All-Inclusive vacation packages with a travel agent and buy their flights, hotel stay and transfers all for one package price.

If you had to describe the differences between Cancun and Riviera Maya in one sentence, it would be: "Beyond their white sand beaches and crystal clear blue water, Cancun is like a Las Vegas on the beach with high rise hotels and nightlife, whereas resorts in the Riviera Maya are typically less than four stories, quieter and surrounded by more fauna."

To elaborate, Cancun is a modern city with more high-rise hotels side-by-side along the beautiful white sand beaches and sparkling pure blue water. Staying at resorts directly in Cancun (or along the "7", Cancun’s hotel district) is great for vacationers who want to explore outside of the resort, try different restaurants, walk to shops and experience the vibrant nightlife at nearby clubs.

The Riviera Maya, which again is just South of Cancun is more of a remote oasis away from the active city. Rising no more than three stories high, most resorts are All-Inclusive with a wider variety of restaurants and bars than in Cancun. This area is better for travelers who prefer to stay right at the resort for dining and nightlife during the majority of their stay. The pristine beaches offer opportunities for relaxing or trying various water sports. You will also find more historical parks and ancient ruins, including Xcaret Park and Tulum in the Riviera Maya.

Choosing which destination region you’d like to stay in is just the start. You then have to choose a specific resort that will match your personality and needs. This is where travel agents who have been to the area and can share their expertise come in truly handy.
