There was negative media publicity, all types of speculation, doubts, etc., about the preparations for the Commonwealth Games 2010. But India managed to get their act together at the last minute and put up one of the most magnificent opening ceremonies the Commonwealth Games has ever witnessed. The 11 day games will feature 71 Commonwealth countries and territories, and around 5000 athletes/officials who will take part in 17 events.

The parade comprising 71 countries was a lovely sight to see with most of the countries showcasing their traditional dresses. To say the least, it was a fashion designer's delight. Hosts India came out last to a loud roar around the stadium. IOA chief Suresh Kalmadi was the first to speak, followed by Commonwealth President Mike Fennel and Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh. Then the Queen's baton arrived after traveling more than a hundred thousand miles through the 71 Commonwealth countries. HRH Prince Charles read out a message from the Queen and along with the President of India, Pratibha Patil, declared the games open.

Now it was time for India to showcase its vast tradition and culture through all the different programs organized for the evening The world got to witness some fine shows put up by artists and volunteers from all over the country. Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto, the official song of the Commonwealth Games 2010 was performed by A.R. Rahman, who then ended the celebrations with his Grammy Award winning song, Jai Ho.
