Mental illness is an illness of the mind. There are various types of mental illnesses that affect the human brain. They can be from mild to severe and are capable enough to cause a disruption in the daily activities of the patient. Mental illnesses usually occur when we stop socializing or we don't seek treatment of our fears. Before, a case of mental illness was very rare but now people suffer from all sorts of mental illnesses.

The burden of mental illnesses on health has been ignored throughout the world. According to recent data mental illnesses are the second biggest contributor of deaths in the United States. Nearly 2/3rd of the people suffering mental illnesses and disorders do not seek treatment and end up causing more damage to their brain. People should realize that these mental illnesses do not occur because you've failed or you don't have the will power or courage to do something big. They are legitimate illnesses which can be treated by taking specific medications.

List of Common Mental Illnesses

The following give names are the common types of mental illnesses that affect about 1/4th of population in the US.

Neurosis
It's a state of anxiety and depression in which people are still able to distinguish between real and imaginary. Symptoms of neurosis depression, social anxiety, different phobias and obsessive compulsive disorder.

Schizophrenia
Doctors use this term to describe the person's state of mind when he/she starts having a different experience of his/her own identity, thoughts and perceptions which are way beyond normal understanding. For instance people who hear voices or believe that they are being followed or targeted by others may be diagnosed as a schizophrenic patient.

Psychosis
Psychosis is one of the most common mental illnesses in children. When an individual is not able to tell the difference between real and unreal. Symptoms of psychosis include manic depression and schizophrenia.

Personality Disorder
When a person suffers from personality disorder their character traits also get affected. This causes them to behave in antisocial way. The changes in their behavior may be mild or severe but all are associated with depression and inappropriate behavior towards other people.

Dementia
Even the name scares you, it's the most horrifying brain disorder with several possible causes, some known and some are unknown. Signs and symptoms of dementia include forgetfulness, confusion of dates and events and anxiety.

Bipolar Disorder
Due to severe depression some people experience sudden changes in mood, they also experience the feeling of no energy in the body. Some people may also experience depression and panic attacks from time to time.

Post Natal Depression
Some women after childbirth experience this syndrome. This a serious condition and can be treated easily if proper medications are taken.

Common Mental Illnesses in Teenagers

Being a teen is not easy. If adults think that they live a pressurized life, adolescents face no less. Teens face pressure ever day - do well in school, be popular with peers, to gain approval of parents, to make the sports team and to be cool in front of friends and family. The most common reason that causes mental illnesses in teenagers is seeing their parents getting divorced. In spite facing such pressures most teens turn into mature adults. Unfortunately, it's not the case with all of them. Some teens just cannot deal with the pressures and suffer from serious emotional problems.
