Comforter Sizes

Knowledge about comforter sizes is always handy. If you are not aware about how to select a comforter on accounts of its size, then the following article on comforter sizes, is for you...
A comforter is a common type of blanket, which is used for staying warm while sleeping. Sometimes they are also used as mattress covers. Comforters are mainly made of two components, the filling and the shelling or covering. Since keeping us warm is their main function, they are mainly made of layers of warm batting like polyester, down feathers, silk or wool. You can also find some exquisite fur comforters, which are combined with silk or satin shelling. Shelling or covering of the regular comforters, on the other hand, is typically comprised cotton, polyester or silk fabric. You can find various comforter sizes, colors, designs and patterns according to your own preferences.

How to Determine Comforter Sizes

You need to consider a few things before determining comforter dimensions. The most important thing to keep in mind is bed sizes differ in width, length and depth. This means that knowing the kind of bed that you have (like twin, queen, king, full, double, etc.) is not enough. Remember that these sizes may vary as per the manufacturers. However, it is important to buy a comforter that goes closest to the actual size of your bed and the one that provides ample amounts of warmth and maximum bed coverage. Along with the bed size, you also need to consider the mattress sizes because their depths vary considerably.

It is also important to understand that a comforter acts as drape, since it covers all the sides of the bed. You can simply measure its size from one end of the mattress to the legs of the bed on the other side. Also measure the width of the mattress till the floor. Secondly, determine your sleeping warmth level and the design, pattern and construction of the comforters that you require. These two things will decide the fill weight and fill power of the comforter that you buy. Fill weight is the amount of batting used for that comforter. The more the batting, the warmer the comforter will keep you. Fill power is the lofting and insulating property of the comforter. It also decides the fluffiness of it. A comforter with high fill power requires less fill weight, since its fluffiness is greater. These last are a few general instructions that come into play after you are sure about the exact size.

What are the Standard Comforter Sizes

Here is a chart that briefly explains the comforter sizes according to bed types. It is important for you to understand that the actual comforter sizes may differ a few inches from the values that are given below.

Comforter Sizes (Acc. Beds) Mattress Sizes (in Inches) Comforter Widths (in Inches) Comforter Lengths (in Inches)
Crib Comforter Size 28 x 52 28 to 36 46 to 56
Twin Comforter Size 39 x 75 66 to 68 86 to 88
King Comforter Size (Standard/Eastern) 76 x 80 100 to 102 86 to 88
Double Comforter Size 60 x 80 81 to 84 86 to 88
Queen Comforter Size 60 x 80 86 to 88 96 to 100
California King Comforter Size 72 x 84 107 to 110 96 to 98

Also remember that the mattress depths may vary greatly by manufacturers, hence, you need to measure the exact depth of your mattress before purchasing a comforter for it. Standard mattress depth is about 7 inches to 9 inches and deep mattress depth is about 10 inches to 15 inches. Extra deep mattresses are also available and these have as much as a 22 inch depth. Make it a point to purchase a comforter that contains adequate material to cover this additional depth. You need to be extra careful while determining a full comforter size, which is filled with down and such fluffy material. The down sizes are not listed in the above chart. They tend to puff out the fabric and hence you need to purchase slightly larger comforters.
