Colorado is in the Rocky Mountain west of the United States and is the highest state in the union, averaging in elevation 6,790 feet above sea level. It has 53 peaks of more than 14,000 feet and over 250 peaks higher than 13,000 feet. It is bordered by Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. Its name is derived from the Spanish word meaning "colored" or "reddish" and describes many of its colorful rock formations that can be seen in the mountains and western plateaus of the state.
