Colon spasms or spastic colons are also referred to as irritable bowel syndrome. Its causes are not yet known. However, urinary tract infections are sometimes said to be the main cause. Over sensitivity of the colon or large intestine to certain specific foods is also said to be responsible for causing irritable bowel syndrome. However, some studies suggest that it is immune reaction or it is caused due to an undetected infection. Certain studies have also linked anxiety and depression to it. Though causes are unknown, the symptoms are very evident, let's take a look at them.

Symptoms

These spasms are characterized by continuous abdominal pain. Major symptoms are constipation and diarrhea. The symptoms may vary according to individuals and they may also worsen due to menstrual periods, excessive indulgence in fried foods and excess stress. A person is also affected by vomiting and nausea. There is irregular and infrequent bowel movements. Difficulty in emptying the bowels characterized by hard stools is another symptom. There is a feeling of not being able to empty the bowel completely. A feeling like gas is trapped inside and not being able to pass it, stomach cramps and mucus in stools are some other commonly observed symptoms.

Treatment

Though currently there are no treatment options available to cure this condition completely, there are many types of treatments available for reducing and relieving the symptoms.

Medications
Irritable bowel syndrome medications are generally prescribed by the doctor to relieve symptoms like severe pain, constipation and diarrhea. For regularizing the bowel movements medications like laxatives, lubiprostone (amitiza), polyethylene glycol, etc. are prescribed. These medicines can increase the amount of fluid in the intestine, thereby facilitating the passage of stool. Some laxatives can also provide relief by retaining more fluid in the intestine. Over-the-counter medications like loperamide can provide relief in diarrhea. Some medications like diphenoxylate, can provide quick relief, by reducing the frequency of bowel movements.

Bile acid binding agents are also prescribed in some cases. For reducing abdominal pain and cramps, anticholinergics, dicyclomine and antidepressants are effective. Anticholinergics has anti-spasmodic properties, which can reduce colon or large intestine's sensitivity to both stress and certain foods. Some pain killers can reduce abdominal pains and cramps. People experiencing anxiety and depression can avail antidepressants, which can be very effective. Some of the medications can have some side effects, so all the medications should only be taken under medical supervision.

Dietary Changes
Apart from medications, some important dietary changes can go a long way in treating it effectively. A high fiber diet can help in regulating the bowel movements. So increase the consumption of whole grains, vegetables like spinach, carrot, etc. and fruits. Consuming some fiber supplements is also beneficial. Along with this, avoid spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine, aerated drinks, chocolate and fatty foods. Some foods which are excessively high in proteins are very difficult to digest and hence need to be avoided. Limiting milk and milk products will also help. However, drinking buttermilk and eating yogurt in appropriate quantity during meals is good for digestion. Drink plenty of water and fruit juices.

Colon spasms are sometimes also related to stress and anxiety. So apart from the above treatments, it is necessary to have a positive outlook towards life. Exercising regularly or practicing yoga can also help to stay calm and stress free throughout the day.
