The popular practice of colon cleansing dates back to the time of the ancient Egyptians and Greeks. Later, this idea was revived during the early years of the twentieth century, but failed to appeal the masses. However, the practice of colon cleansing staged a strong comeback in the recent years. Though enough scientific evidence is not there to support this practice, people are satisfied with the results of this procedure, which is gaining momentum day by day.

What is Colon Cleansing?

Colon cleansing is based on the theory of auto-intoxication, which was discarded by experts during the 1920s. This theory has been adopted by the alternative medical community, which is mainly responsible for the revival of this practice. Auto-intoxication is based on the fact that the colon is responsible for removing the accumulated waste materials from foods and beverages, which is stored in the colon as fecal matter. This fecal matter, which contains toxins and wastes are removed from the colon through bowel movements. Over a period of time, these toxins can build up on the walls of the colon and hinder the normal bowel movements. It can become the breeding ground of harmful bacteria and intestinal parasites. There is also a possibility of the toxins being absorbed into the body, causing symptoms like fatigue, headache, nausea, loss of appetite, irritability, etc. These symptoms can be severe in case of persons with irregular bowel movements or constipation. This absorption of toxins in the colon to the blood stream is called auto-intoxication.

Colon cleansing aims at reducing the effects of auto-intoxication by removing the accumulated toxins in the colon through various methods. Colon cleansing can be of two types, the first being oral cleansing methods, which includes oral consumption of dietary fiber, herbs, laxatives and dietary supplements. The second method is known as colon hydrotherapy, which is otherwise known as colonics or colonic irrigation. This method involves the use of enemas to pump water to the colon, through the rectum. Sometimes, the water may be mixed with herbs, or other liquids.
