Types of Collectible Antique Music Boxes

1. Disc music boxes
2. cylinder music boxes

The music box is a 19th century instrument that resembled a mini wooden box that played sounds by pins on a cylinder or disc striking a tuned steel comb. Musical boxes evolved from the original musical snuff boxes of the earlier century but perfected and without the snuff!

Its history stems from early watchmakers. Music boxes were made in various sizes from hand held to tabletop or even larger. They were primarily made in Switzerland in the early 19th century but later in Germany and the U.S.

Interchangeable metal disks became more popular eventually over the cylinder, thrusting the use of the cylinder based music boxes into early antiquehood. However, these are highly collectible today.
