Cold Sore Blister Treatments

A cold sore is blister of reddish or purple color and normally found on the edges of the lips but also on the chin, nose and cheeks. They are also referred to as herpes labialis or fever blisters. Cold sores are painful and can appear as just one or as several in a bunch. They start out filled with fluid, will crust over and turn into a scab before they finally go away after a week or two. Special treatment is usually not needed for most cold sores.
You do not need to have a cold to get cold sores and while some people call them fever blisters, you do not need a fever to get them either. They are caused by the virus herpes and are one of the most common viral infections. Herpes simplex is the medical name of the virus that causes the cold sores.

There is no cure for cold sores, but there are remedies and medications for the treatment and management of them. There are some home remedies that have been said to lessen the time of the cold sore even though it cannot be cured. Some include:

Applying ice. Put ice to the area every hour for 5-10 minutes while the sore is tingling. The ice will lower the temperature of the area where the sore is forming stop the development of the cold sore. The continuation of the ice to the area will numb it and lessen the itching and pain.

Applying a tea bag. Put a tea bag on the area where the cold sore is beginning to form. It can help to minimize the growth of the sore. The ingredient tannic acid in the tea bag has antiviral properties. It should be placed on the cold sore area for a few minutes each hour.

Petroleum jelly. Put this on the cold sore when it begins to form a scab. This will soften and moisturize it to keep it from cracking and bleeding.

Nutritional supplements. It is believed that l-lysine supplements can lower the number of cold sore outbreaks. This is not a proven fact and should be discussed with a doctor.

The key to cold sores is preventing them from forming. When outside, it is best to wear a lip balm that has a sun screen in it of at least 15 SPF and try to minimize any injury to the lips such as chapping.
