Each person has his or her own hobby and when it comes to hobbies, collecting things is on the top ten list. What one could collect is limited only by the imagination. As a hobby, people collect all sorts of stuff-from the small things you see everyday, to rare and expensive finds to the extremely bizarre.
Each person has his or her own hobby and when it comes to hobbies, collecting things is on the top ten list. What one could collect is limited only by the imagination. As a hobby, people collect all sorts of stuff-from the small things you see everyday, to rare and expensive finds to the extremely bizarre. I remember growing up collecting posters and items of my favorite cartoon character Garfield. On the other hand, my young sister collected Barbie dolls and my Mom kept an extensive collection of stamps and coins that continues to grow up to now. Not surprisingly, I have not only inherited her impressive coin collection, but have become a coin collector myself. And while starting, Mom and her friends who are also coin collectors guide me incessantly.

Coin collection is fun and educational at the same time. People might find it a pleasant surprise to know that as one's coin collection grows, so do their friends and their knowledge. Coin collecting is a good way of making friends and keeping them for good (which is the hardest part actually in friendship). My mother never missed her Saturday date with fellow coin collectors. Over coffee and sumptuous cakes, Mother shared stories and friendship with other coin collection enthusiasts. They shared and exchanged coins. Attending conferences and assemblies for coin collectors is also a good way of meeting new people.

Collecting coins is also an easy and fun way to learn about history and other facts. Each coin has a story---be it the owner's story or the history of the place and country where the coin comes from. And occasionally, collecting coins can bring in good cash. You will be amazed as to what extent some coin collectors can go just to get the coins that are missing from their collection. Log on to E-bay and there will be many people bidding for rare coins. Some even pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for a singe rare coin!

Your coin collection, albeit personal, can be shared with others. Some collectors refused to keep them in a safe place and instead, had the coins mounted and displayed in their homes for others to enjoy.

Collecting coins can be a very demanding hobby, depending on the type of coins you are collecting. It can put a strain on one's pocket as well. However, with care, your collection can prove to be a very good investment in the coming years. Just like antiques, the older these coins get, the higher price they fetch in the market, should you decide to sell them. It can be a priceless heirloom for the family as well.

But more than the financial value that your coin collection may bring in the future, one should note that there is a tremendous satisfaction that one can get, especially if you succeed in finally getting that rare and hard-to-get coin. That triumphant smile, that feeling of satisfaction, that pride, is more than enough to compensate for all the money and efforts in collecting coins. Who knows, in the future, you, yourself will - together with other coin collectors - guide budding coin enthusiasts as well.
