There are many types of attire that are required to be considered for specific occasions like weddings or formal events. And if you do not want people to talk about you being overdressed or under-dressed, it is better to follow a certain attire that is appropriate to that particular occasion. Cocktail attire is one of the dress codes that confuses guests the most.

For Men

In a cocktail attire for men, the clothes consist of a simple suit, or just a well-ironed trouser with a button down shirt and a tie. If you are not sure about the attire, you can wear a button down shirt, a pant with a tie; and get a jacket along with you, in case you find out that most of the guest are wearing a jacket. A tie is not a necessary part of this attire. It is not a good idea to wear anything similar to a tuxedo for an event where a cocktail dress is suggested to be worn. A blazer, a collared shirt, and khakis are another choices that can be considered in this attire.

The colors of the apparel are to be chosen according to the time of the year. For seasons such as fall or winter, good color choices can be darker shades like brown or charcoal. If it is spring or summer that you are attending the event in, opt for dress codes with lighter shades in which you will feel comfortable. A standard practice is to keep a section of a light-colored handkerchief outside the pocket of your dark coat. Do not even think of coming to a cocktail event dressed in jeans, T-shirts, and sneakers; it will make a very bad impression on the guests.

For Women

When it comes to cocktail attire for women, there are many dresses, such as formal suits or dresses. A typical cocktail party dress is dark and of knee-length. If the event is being held in fall or winter, you can consider wearing a dark woolen dress with stockings. If the season is in spring or summer, a strapless or single-strap dress would seem appropriate for the occasion. Cocktail attire can be made to look better using different hairstyles, fashion jewelry, handbags, shoes or sandals, and other fashion accessories. Another good choice can be a sweater with a knee-length skirt, or a pantsuit. If the event is being held in summer and that too outdoors, a good dress would be a light-colored sun-dress. If the event to too formal, avoid wearing much of bright colors and accessories.
