Cobb salad is nothing but a colorful, attractively arranged garden salad. It was first introduced by Robert H. Cobb, first cousin of Ty Cobb. It was a prime item of the Hollywood Brown Derby menu card. Brown Derby was a chain of restaurants in California and Los Angeles and the first restaurant was shaped like a man's derby hat.

The Original Cobb Salad

The first Cobb salad was made instantly. No special efforts were involved in preparation of the salad. In 1937, Sid Grauman, operator of Grauman's Chinese Theater, once visited Brown Derby. Brown Derby owner Robert H. Cobb wanted to welcome the guest in a special way. He went into the kitchen and browsed the refrigerator for ingredients. He took out the stuff from the refrigerator and chopped everything finely. He arranged it in a nice colorful way and thus, Cobb salad was born! The special guest, Grauman really enjoyed it and every time he visited Brown Derby, he ordered a Cobb salad! It soon gained popularity in Hollywood and film stars started requesting 'Cobb salad'. So, other hotels also added the salad to their menu. Nobody was bothered about the calories in the salad then.

The original Cobb salad contained tomatoes, crisp bacon, lettuce, chives, chicken breast, hard cooked eggs, avocado, Roquefort cheese (a sheep milk blue cheese from the south of France ), specially made mixture of salad oil and vinegar flavored with herbs, spices and other ingredients like salt, lemon juice, black pepper, garlic, etc. These days, numerous varieties of salad dressing are used to make a Cobb salad.
