Cleaning and Caring for Granite Countertops

Over the last few decades people have increasingly adopted solid surface countertops for their kitchens and bathrooms. These textured stone surfaces not only look beautiful but are durable and heat-resistant as well. One of the most popular choices is a granite countertop.

How to Clean a Granite Countertop?

The best way to clean and care for granite countertops is to use soap water and a soft cloth. Use of lemon and vinegar-based cleaners can cause abrasion to the surface. Any strong detergent, corrosive liquid or scouring powder would make the granite loose its shine or may lead to the appearance of fuzzy spots or rings known as 'etching' on its surface. A daily wash of the surface will eliminate the possibilities of stains penetrating the porous surface. It can then be dried using a soft cloth. Granite countertops are susceptible to stains as the material is porous. Depending on the intensity and kind, the stains can be removed by using these household tips.

Use of poulticing: This method involves drawing out the stain by using an adhesive material. Make a paste of flour, dish washing liquid and water. Cover the stain with this paste with a plastic wrap and let it dry overnight. The next day it can be scrapped out gently and washed with warm water.

Washing off the oil stain: In case of an oil stain, replace dish washing liquid in the above mixture to hydrogen peroxide. If it does not work, the hydrogen peroxide could be replaced with ammonia.

Organic stains: For removing an organic stain (tea, coffee or fruit stain) combine the hydrogen peroxide with ammonia in the above mentioned mixture.

Cleaning ink and wine stains: This is a stronger formula for permanent stains where bleach combined with molding plaster is spread over the stained area for half an hour. Then remove the paste and wash the area with water. However the best way to avoid these stains on a granite countertop is to blot the spills as soon as they occur especially when using certain acidic fruits as they etch the surface.

Sealing the granite: Since granite is porous, it needs to be sealed annually or twice a year so that it can resist stains on the surface. You could get this done by approaching any local granite shop.
