The commercial products are no doubt effective, but most of them contain some toxic substances, for which they should be applied only in a well ventilated room. Besides this, one should always wear protective hand gloves while applying such substances, and strictly follow the instructions mentioned in the label of the product. On the other hand, the natural rust removers are always safe to be used for removing rust from metals.

Once you are done with scrubbing the metal surface, you can apply the rust removal product on it. One of the most readily available and non-toxic natural rust removal substance is white vinegar. The small metal items can be dipped into undiluted vinegar to remove rust from them. For cleaning the large items, vinegar can be directly poured or applied with the help of a cloth. Let it sit for a while, so that it can help to dissolve the rust. Then it can be simply wiped out from the metal surfaces.

Like vinegar, baking soda is another excellent natural rust cleaner. Just add water to baking soda to make a thick paste, and then, apply a thick layer of it on the rusted area of the metal. Allow the paste to settle for a while, and check if the rust has loosen. If it has, then scrub the surface to remove rust from the metal surface. Similarly, hydrogen peroxide can also be used for rust removal by just pour hydrogen peroxide on the surface, and let it sit for a few minutes. Now, scrub the rusted area with steel wool or brush. Hydrogen peroxide can also be mixed with borax for this purpose.
