Constipation can be a really annoying experience, which is characterized by hard feces and difficulty in passing stool as well as infrequent bowel movements. It has become a very common health problem, mainly due to wrong eating habits and sedentary lifestyle. In severe cases, chronic constipation results in difficult and painful bowel movement, that can eventually, lead to bowel obstruction, rectal bleeding and the development of piles or hemorrhoids. These are some of the alarming conditions that can be associated with constipation. Usually when constipation lasts for more than a week, it is termed as chronic constipation.

Causes of Chronic Constipation
An unhealthy eating habit, insufficient fluid intake as well as lack of physical activities are the most common reasons behind chronic constipation. People who prefer to eat more fat and refined sugar products and less of fiber rich foods, have been observed to be the most common sufferers of constipation. Similarly, those who do not drink enough water or fluid can also get constipation frequently. Apart from these, sometimes it can be caused by certain medications like diuretics and those that contain minerals such as iron, aluminum and calcium. In many instances, constipation can occur due to hormonal disorders as well. It can be present in case of hypothyroidism or insufficient production of thyroid hormone and over production of parathyroid hormone. Pregnant women are also prone to suffer from constipation, as the level of both estrogen and progesterone increases in the body during pregnancy.

Treating Chronic Constipation
A change in the dietary habit and lifestyle are usually the two most important measures to cure this condition. Most of the time, the condition resolves with sufficient intake of fluid and dietary fiber. The foods that contain a significant amount of dietary fiber are, fruits and vegetables like spinach, celery, beets, carrots, tomatoes, radishes. Instead of frying these foods in excess oil, try to consume them raw as salad to derive maximum benefits. Among the fruits, you can take apples, bananas, papayas, grapes and oranges. Eating an apple daily in the morning can ensure regular bowel movement and cure constipation.

Similarly, you can also drink a glass of orange juice in the morning for chronic constipation relief. Banana is one of the most simple chronic constipation remedies. It is known as a natural laxative, which can soften the stool and make its passage easier, thereby ensuring regular bowel movements. You can take it raw or boil it and take it along with milk. Almond oil is one of the most effective cures, which can be taken with warm milk. Just take one or two teaspoon of almond oil with warm milk before going to bed for a few days to ensure regular bowel movement.

Honey has several health benefits and it can also alleviate the complications of constipation. A spoonful of honey taken daily along with a glass of warm water can cure constipation within a few days. It should be ideally taken in the night just before sleeping. Triphala churna is an age-old Ayurvedic medicine that can do wonders for your digestive system. It can alleviate not only constipation, but several other disorders of the digestive system like, indigestion and gas. The medicine comes in a powdery form, which is prepared from three important herbs, namely, Indian gooseberry, Chebulic myrobalan and Bellerie myrobalan. To use it as a chronic constipation cure, mix the powder in a glass of water and keep it for the whole night. The next day, drink the liquid in the morning in an empty stomach.

Psyllium husk is a well-known natural laxative that can provide considerable relief in chronic constipation. You can mix the powder made from psyllium husks in a glass of water and drink it two to three times a day. You can also try prune juice for a few days. For best results, drink it twice daily, once in the morning and then again, in the night just before going to bed. Within a few days, you will experience significant relief from constipation.

Even physicians recommend natural methods like increasing the consumption of fiber rich foods and drinking plenty of water for curing this condition. As a sedentary lifestyle can be an important contributory factor for constipation, therefore, regular physical activities can help to alleviate the condition. It may require the use of conventional medications like, laxatives and enemas for immediate relief. However, excessive use of these medications can lead to dependence on them for bowel movement and hence, not ideal for long-term use. Therefore, it is always safe to rely on the natural cures to alleviate the condition and prevent it in the future.
