Chlamydia, a sexually transmitted disease affects nearly four million people in the United States every year and is prevalent among both the genders. Chlamydia is spread by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis. Although, chlamydia can be timely cured, an unawareness about this sexually transmitted disease makes it go undetected in many cases. Consequently, many unreported cases are not counted in the surveys of the health clinics and medical researchers. It is expected that many people don't know the symptoms of chlamydia and hence there may be many more cases that are put forward by the statisticians.

Causes of Chlamydia Infection
Like various sexually transmitted diseases, chlamydia is spread due to unsafe and unprotected sex. Men who are involved in sexual acts related to multiple partners are at higher risk of getting affected by this infection. Chlamydia shows various symptoms, however many men ignore these symptoms and hence this infection goes undetected for a long time. Chlamydia infection can be transferred from one person to the other who are involved in the vaginal, oral and anal sex.

Signs of Chlamydia
Diagnosing chlamydia is not very easy as chlamydia symptoms take nearly two to three weeks to surface after the bacteria has infected the person. Nonetheless, knowing about the chlamydia symptoms in men is crucial so that men can be aware about this infection. Initially, it is unlikely that any symptoms of chlamydia are experienced by men, however after some weeks of the exposure, fever can be the first sign of chlamydia. Further, burning sensation while urinating that becomes prominent every time one feels the urge to urinate can be possible hint of chlamydia.

With the advancements in the infection some men may experience a foul watery and smelly (bad odor) discharge from the penis. Further, the symptoms can be following:
  • If infection has been due to anal sex, then burning sensation in the anal, anal bleeding or anal discharge can occur.
  • Burning sensation in the rectal area is often a hint towards this disease.
  • Sore throat with severe infection in the throat can be possible sign of infection due to oral sex.
  • If chlamydia is not treated timely, skin problems, eye inflammation and conjunctivitis can also affect men.
Treatment of Chlamydia in Men
Chlamydia has often been linked to male infertility. However, it occurs in the advanced stages of the disease. For men suffering from chlamydia, the good news is that this infection is completely curable and can be treated effectively. Nearly, most of the cases are treated by giving antibiotics to the patient. Under the strict medical supervision men suffering from chlamydia must adopt some antibiotic regime with fix doses. In some cases, both the partners have to follow the antibiotics regime although one might not be suffering from infection. Although treatment for chlamydia is available, nothing can be more healthy and lifesaving then prevention. Abstaining from sexual intercourse with multiple partners and using latex condoms are some of the simple precautionary measures men should adopt to avoid the risk of chlamydia.

Maintaining good sexual health is all about being involved in a monogamous sexual relationship or to say the least, adopting methods of sexual hygiene and safe sexual practices. Abstinence from sex unless one is not cured completely is important, as this infection can resurface periodically. Chlamydia in men is curable and with right medication and guidelines one can get rid of this infection.
