Once enrolled, the 4 year chiropractic program, in the first 2 years, comprises about 4200 hours of classroom study, laboratory and clinical experience. Subjects covered in these programs are Anatomy, Physiology, Public health, Microbiology, Pathology, and Biochemistry. The last 2 years concentrate more on the core subjects about manipulation and adjustment of spinal cord. The subjects include Neurology, Orthopedics, Geriatrics, Physiotherapy, and Nutrition. Once the program is complete, the person is awarded with the degree: Doctor of Chiropractic (DC). Chiropractic programs are affiliated to Council on Chiropractic Education.
Coming to employment in this field, most of the chiropractors must be licensed for commencing with their practice. Chiropractors mostly operate solo, but in the initial phase of the career may work for other chiropractors as interns. Although some of the lot, opt for teaching or research at chiropractic institutions and hospitals respectively, a rough 44 % practice this as a profession and are self employed. In 2008, there were about 49,100 openings for this job. Being a drugless treatment option, chiropractic is becoming indisputably popular with health conscious people. As per a survey conducted by Chiropractic Economics magazine in 2009, the average chiropractor salary was USD 94,454, which is substantially more than USD 44,540 - USD 66,490, earned in the year 2008. Although the initial salary may be low, with years of practice and experience, this career ought to help you reap good financial benefits in the long run.
A very interesting aspect of chiropractor jobs is that, the practitioner can specialize in other health domains like sports injuries, neurology, orthopedics, pediatrics, nutrition, internal disorders, or diagnostic imaging, which will broaden his horizon and give him the flexibility to switch his career as and when he wants to.
