Repairing a Cracked Windshield
Sometimes the chipped part cannot be repaired, but in this case we will consider that this is nothing to worry about. So what we need for windshield repair is a glass cleaner, a windshield crack repair kit and box cutter tool.
Point 1
Cleaning and preparing the area for the repair is the first step before getting to the actual repair. So wipe the area around damaged part using a glass cleaner and let it dry. It would be a good idea to keep a rag below the damaged area. This will not let excess repair material from spreading on the other parts and on the body paint during windshield crack repair.
Point 2
Get the adhesive disc from the kit and push out the hole from it and then peel off the paper backing. Now roughly get the disc in the middle of area to be repaired. Press the disc on the windshield for cracked windshield repair. The tab on the disc has to be pointed up. Then peel of the backing off the side of the disc which is facing you. Attach the plastic support rod, the instructions for which will be given in the kit.
Point 3
For windshield chip repair now what needs to be done is that you have to remove the syringe cover and then press the syringe in the support rod. The syringe will then have to be twisted in its place.
Point 4
The next thing to do to repair broken windshield is to pull back the syringe plunger and then push the chemical meant for windshield repair in the area of the windshield. Do this till the syringe is empty. Let the repaired windshield be in sunlight for at least half an hour.
Finally, pull the syringe as well as the support rod off the adhesive disc. Using a razor blade, get rid of the adhesive disc. You can even use a box cutter tool. For scraping away extra repair material box cutter can be used. You're done!
Cost of Repairing a Chipped Windshield
Akin to any other repair work, the cost you will have to pay for repairing a chipped windshield depends on how serious is the damage and where are you located. But here we are discussing a small chip so, if you take your car to an auto glass shop for that, it can cost around $20 or so. In case you get it done from a mobile repair service, you might have to pay between $40 and $90. If it is just a small chip, the experts say that it is a good option to get it repaired, rather than getting the complete windshield replaced.
Last, but not the least, if the chipped windshield is obstructing the vision of the driver and seems difficult to fix, then contemplating the idea of replacing the windshield all together might not be bad! That's all!
