Chinese Herbs That Treat Nausea

Nausea is a common problem that many people suffer from. This article looks at how some Chinese herbs may benefit those who suffer from this common ailment.
Anyone (and that’s probably everyone) who has suffered from nausea knows how uncomfortable this sensation is. Nausea can have many different causes from motion sickness to side-effects from Western drugs. However, eating excessive amounts of cold, fatty, sweet, spicy, or processed food can also lead to problems in the digestion, primarily the stomach, in which nausea is a symptom. Chinese medicine considers nausea an inappropriate upward movement of "qi" from the stomach, and anyone who has experienced nausea can attest to how "inappropriate" that feeling that feeling can be.

When considering nausea, Chinese medicine addresses the problem with a number of different methods. First, approaching the acute sick feeling Chinese medicine uses herbs to "redirect" the qi of the stomach downward. Chinese medicine uses many herbs for this purpose; Fennel, Tangerine peel, and Ginger are three of the most important and are widely know by herbalists throughout much of the world for this effect. Each of these has a connection with food and very safe. Ginger is the most researched of these, and all three are very safe as well as being effective.

Then, Chinese medicine approaches the possible root causes of the nausea and addresses them. One of the most common causes of nausea is digestive weakness or simply over-eating. A person’s poor eating habits can lead to what is called "food stagnation" or "food accumulation," in Chinese medicine, this is especially true or excessive consumption of meat and fats. Chinese Hawthorne is the most important herb to treat this condition and is widely used in China, packaged as dried fruit (think fruit roll-up), drinks, and even candied.

Chinese medicine uses a number of herbs to strengthen the digestion. The formula of Bai-zhu Atractylodes, Codonopsis, Chinese Licorice, and Poria is known as the "Four Gentlemen" in Chinese medicine and is one of the most famous combinations in Chinese medicine to strengthen the digestion. Adding Ginger and Tangerine peel the formula becomes "Six Gentlemen" and is especially useful when digestive weakness leads to nausea, vomiting, and other digestive difficulties.

A weak digestion can not properly process food and fluids and this poorly digested food can lead to accumulated food as mentioned above. The combination of Job’s Tears, Poria, and Astragalus are both good for both strengthening the digestion and helping the body to transform this accumulated food into either usable material or to discharge it through the digestive process. Finally, sometimes nausea can be caused by inflammation in the stomach and both Dendrobium and Job’s Tears are excellent to cool the inflammation and nourish the stomach.

While most people will occasionally encounter this very uncomfortable situation, using of Chinese herbs can be extremely helpful for the treatment of this otherwise very uncomfortable experience. Those that have a chronic nausea may find Chinese herbs offer the answer to their problem.
