"Kids! Come into the kitchen for breakfast!" My mom called from the kitchen.
"Coming, Lori!" Justin yelled back.
We got up from the couch and went into the kitchen for breakfast. Justin sat down next to me and our moms were across from us. They made us waffles and had the syrup and butter on the table-ready for us to dig in.
My mom placed the forks and knives on the table while Teresa got us all drinks. We toasted before eating our Christmas breakfast.
About half way through the meal, the phone began ringing.
"Justin, sweetie, you don't have to pick it up. Its breakfast." My mom tried to stop him.
"It's alright. It's probably important since they're calling at nine in the morning." He chuckled, going to the phone.
"Hello? Wilson and Rikeson residence..." He answered. I shook my head and shoved some food into my mouth. He was such a goody-two-shoes.
"Oh, really?" He seemed kind of distracted. His eyes widened and he looked like he was in shock. "Oh, Th-thank you. B-bye..."
He just stood there, staring, until the buzz came from the other line. His grip loosened on the phone and he dropped it. It crashed against the cold and checkered tile floor, shattering into many pieces.
"Justin? Are you all right?" I asked, standing up and rubbing his back, truly concerned and hoping it was nothing awful that he'd been informed of.
"They... they called me back..." He mumbled.
"Who called you back, baby? What's wrong?" I stood on my tiptoes to kiss his cheek and pushed his hair out of his eyes.
He turned into me and buried himself in my arms. When he began sobbing uncontrollably, I held onto him tighter, now worried to death about what he was going to say.
"The doctors..." He mumbled against my neck before pulling his head up to look me in the eyes.
He bent his head over mine and tilted my head back gently to look up at him. He smiled.
"What about the doctors?" I murmured against his lips, for they were merely inches from mine.
"They mixed up the results... I'm not dying... I don't have the disease!" His smile broadened and he kissed me roughly on the lips before running around the room like a little kid.
I sunk down into my chair. He was going to live. He was going to be with me forever. We could get married, have kids, and finish off school together even! He was mine and I wasn't going to lose him.
Maybe we wouldn't turn out so bad after all.
* *After Break* *
I walked into school, proudly holding Justins hand. We headed to our first class, receiving glares from Mark and his gang, but awes from the other girls. Some of their boyfriends even joined in teasing us-in a fun, sweet way of course.
I took my seat next to Justin and got out my English homework before turning his and mine in. When I sat back down at my desk, I began scribbling out more lyrics. Justin leaned his head on my shoulder while I wrote, surveying all of my emotions flooding onto the paper.
Once I was at the really sad and tough part of the song to write, he kissed my neck repeatedly, reminding me that he was here for me-as the song was about loneliness and emptiness. It was of the emotions I felt when I was betraying Justins love for me to save our moms jobs and having to face Mark everyday.
Deliah was busy flirting with Rex. I wasn't surprised when he kissed her in the middle of class. Shed told me that they were already sort of going out and that they'd made out already.
The bell rang when I finished the song and Justin and I headed for second period science. We plopped down in our normal seats in the back.
By the time fourth period rolled around, I was frustrated by Mark from study hall and happy that our band could practice. We were going to call ourselves HOPE. Mr. Carsen approved of the name happily and had everything set up for us to begin as the bell rang. Sherry was glaring at me from across the room. I laughed at her and flipped her off before planting a huge smooch on Justin's lips.
We took up our positions and began playing Teardrops from the Sky, and then we found a few chords to go with my new song and tried that out. Everyone loved that as well, but Mr. Carsen insisted I played the Teardrops song at the competition. It was a slow alternative rock kind of song.
The bell rang once we finished rehearsing both songs a few times. The competition was this weekend. Everyone was really excited-especially Deliah and Rex who were channeling their excitement towards other things; like kissing.
Soon school and work were over. We had only worked a three-hour shift since school started again. Justin got employee of the month and a raise of 5 dollars more an hour. Everyone knew us really well there; they thought we were the best employees working for Pete.
Neither of our moms got fired, so everything was all good. Besides, after we beat the shit out of Mark, we got a restraining order for him-his dad wasn't too happy with him once he found out what he did to me. Mark was transferring in a week.
We walked into our house and plopped down on my couch, having done all of our homework during school and some of it during work when we weren't serving. Justin and his mom just decided to live here with us and help pay the bills since we were just going to go to college together later and they didn't want to live by themselves.
They said they were going to waste all of their extra save for a house money ongoing to clubs and bars to meet guys. But we all knew that they'd save it for us if we needed it later in life.
"What do you want to watch?" Justin asked, throwing his arm around my shoulders. I snuggled against his side.
"Mmmnn, cartoons..." I mumbled in response, closing my eyes and resting my head on his chest.
He turned on the TV and we sat there on the couch, staring mindlessly at the screen for a few hours until our moms came home.
"Why don't you take her upstairs, Justin? She looks beat. Did she eat yet?" My mom asked.
"No, not yet. I'll take her up for a nap until dinners ready..." He smiled and lifted me up off the couch.
Justin carried me upstairs and gently laid me on my bed, and then he himself lay down with me. I rolled over and buried myself in his arms. His grip around me tightened and I listened to his breathing slow down. Soon it steadied and I knew he was asleep, only then could I fall asleep myself, listening to his heartbeat as it cooed to me.
I woke up 3 hours later; Justin was watching me sleep. He smiled and pecked me on the lips. We got up and went downstairs to eat dinner. Mom made Mac n cheese-my favorite and Justins too-or at least it was now since we had it so much.
Once we were done shoving our faces full of food, we all decided to watch a scary movie since it was only around seven o'clock at night.
I fell asleep during the movie and Justin had to carry up to my room, once again, so I could sleep. This time, he didn't join me. Instead he slept in his own bed. My bed felt kind of empty without him there. I missed him and it was harder for me to go to sleep.
To sooth my worries and fix my problems, I sneaked out of bed at around midnight and crept into his room. Justin was sleeping contentedly in his bed. I watched him sleep for a few minutes. Every once in a while, he'd stir in his sleep, feel around the bed for something, frown, then go back to sleep. I smiled slightly at this-he was missing me!
I pulled back the covers a little ways before climbing in next to him. Instinctively, he wrapped his arms tight around me. I snuggled into his firm and muscular chest, wallowing in his amazing scent.
"What took you so long...?" He mumbled groggily, still half asleep.
I smiled at this dazed yet clear and concise comment before drifting off in his arms.
* * * Battle of the Bands * * *
I waited backstage along with Deliah and the guys, extremely nervous before going on. There were about 3 other bands going on before us, and the ones before them were really good.
The nerve-wracking silence backstage was ebbing away each of my last nerves, causing me to have a slight panic attack. My entire body shook, leaving me panting and breathless. Queasiness then overtook me and I felt as if I were going to puke my guts out right in front of everyone while I was onstage. Justin noticed my worried and scared expression and came over to soothe me.
"Don't worry, Rayna. You know that you're as good, if not better than some of these guys. Your lyrics are awesome and we've been practicing for at least a month with everyone. Well do great, baby. You'll do great..." He beamed at me and wrapped his arms around my shoulders. I snuggled into him and buried my head in his chest.
The queasiness subsided and I stopped shaking. I finally caught my breath and inhaled deeply. He smiled and kissed me on the lips briefly before he pulled us back over to the spot where we were supposed to be with the band.
Soon, it was our turn to perform. We nervously took our spots on stage-Justin seemed entirely calm, though.
"Ladies and punks, give it up for HOPE!" The announcer boomed through the microphone.
We were greeted by loud applause and cheering. Everyone seemed ecstatic for us to be there. At least they liked our looks, and I was hoping they'd like our music as well.
"This is Teardrops from the Sky..." Justin announced as he took the microphone.
The girls were already enchanted by his voice by the first time he spoke. They instantly cheered for him. I smirked. He was mine and they couldn't have him. Just knowing that little fact gave me the extra boost that I needed to wash away my shyness on stage and give me enough courage to play my best.
Then we began and played the song just as we practiced. Everyone was jumping up and down and cheering for us. By the time we finished the song, the whole place was in an uproar, wanting more of us.
"Whoa, looks like you guys hit home! Ladies and punks; that was HOPE!" Everyone cheered as we headed off stage.
The band after us was horrible. There were many boos and I even heard something crash on the stage. They were shooed off immediately. After the last band went and everyone was cleaning up the stage, a man came up to Justin and me, for we were sitting together on one of the couches in the back.
"Hello, my name is Rick Fields, I am representing Golden Records. May I speak to the manager of the band? Or perhaps the leader?"
