Chat Room Etiquette

Following just a few common courtesies will ensure that your chat room experience is fun and exciting for everyone involved.
The Internet has opened up all kinds of opportunities for people to connect online. Chat rooms, for example, have become an incredibly popular communication, especially in the adult dating world. Following just a few common courtesies will ensure that your experience is fun and exciting for everyone involved.

1. Advanced Preparation

When you first choose a chat room, take a moment to read its guidelines and rules. Rules will differ from site to site so it’s a good idea to acquaint yourself with them each time you use a new site. If you’re looking for more relaxed rules, you’ll find that adult chat rooms tend to have fewer restrictions.

2. Learning the Ropes

After you’ve chosen an interesting chat room, spend some time ‘lurking’ before you join the conversation. Lurking is simply watching the conversation for a short time so that you become familiar with the topic and tone of the room before you jump right in.

3. Introductions

Once you decide to participate in the conversation, make sure to introduce yourself and state your gender. Chatting anonymously is considered a no no. Take a moment to offer a quick ‘hello’ before you jump in.

4. Directness

Now it’s time for full participation in the chat room. Remember to be direct when chatting and use people’s usernames when answering or posting questions. It helps others follow the conversation.

5. Real Names and User Names

Perhaps you’ve met a fellow chatter in the real world and you know their real name. Keep their security and privacy in mind and only refer to them by their username.

6. Monopolizing

Chat rooms are no different from cocktail parties. When you’re in a conversation, don’t hog all the chat time. Try to include other people into the conversation and allow some time to pass when you’re not posting. If you and only one other person seem to be conversing for awhile, consider moving your chat to a private message board.

7. Keeping Your Cool

From time to time, you’re chat room might be visited by someone with the sole mission to agitate the participants. Don’t let their rude or confrontational behavior heat you up. Most chat rooms will allow you to block someone so that you no longer can see their posts. Advise other members of the chat to do the same and the jerk will simply move on. On the flip side, don’t be rude and confrontational yourself, even accidentally. You might not always be able to get your tone across because people can’t hear your voice or see your facial expressions. They may misinterpret your comments as being rude. Not only will you be blocked but you may be barred from the site altogether.

8. Protecting Yourself

At all times keep your wits about you and be careful about how much personal information you are divulging. As a general safety precaution, don’t give out your phone number, full name, address, or email address… and don’t ask others for this information.
