Chapter 2 - Chasing a memory
Ok so I don't really need a fake passport I just have to apply for a real one and forge my mom's signature on the documents and I only need one signature. So Monday morning the last say of school I picked up the documents and sneaked it home in my school bag. As soon as I got home I signed the documents took my picture, printed it out and attached it. Perfect now all I had to do was wait two weeks for it to process then I could pick it up in the meantime I could do some small jobs for extra money and prepare my self for my adventure. I looked after the next door neighbor's daughter every afternoon and did a night shift at the corner book shop it wasn't a lot of money but I was going to use all my savings that was meant for university too and that was quite a bit of money.
I de-dusted the tatty dusty suitcase but later decided I should probably use a backpack instead I could rather buy new clothes if I needed them so instead I filled a huge backpack I bought on e-bay a while ago but never used with a layer of clothes, then some photos of my family and some things you could find nowhere except South Africa like biltong, Cape version of 17 magazine and Dairy milk chocolate, I put another layer of clothes and shoes and I was set. I filled my purse with a wad of cash, my bank card and important documents for my flight I decided to take a flight to the UK then backpack from there. I was a bit scared but really excited too, I was fulfilling my brother's dream I just wished he could've been going with me.
Two weeks later I was on the airport and waiting for my documents to be processed. The woman was really nice and she didn't ask where my mom was or anything like that and I was relieved. I wrote a note to my mom on a post-it note pad that she keeps on the fridge I kept it brief , it just read- " Hey mom , I've gone backpacking for the summer in Europe. I'll be back in a month so please don't worry.p.sI'm doing this for Sam and for me.love, jade." I hope that she understood that I had to do this.
Finally after the long line and waiting for my documents to be processed and having my luggage put on the plane I was seated by a window in economy yes but I was comfortable and I felt like I was finally getting somewhere. I slept through most of the flight except when I was flicking through the channels on my tiny screen or snacking on the food they gave me. After my tummy was full and id had my fill of trashy late night television I fell asleep and when I next woke up I had landed on London airport.
Ok so the plan was backpack in the UK then toward the end if there was time left for vacation I was going to do the rest of Europe...Well some places in Europe. The first difference that hit me as soon as I left the plane was the gust of cold air that hit my face.Brrr... it was so cold I could pretend smoke a cigarette with my breath. Speaking of breath...I forgot I probably had morning breath so I went off to the ladies to freshen up before collecting my luggage and buying a map.
So off I went to the ladies and washed my face, raked a comb through my hair ,brushed my teeth and changed my clothes I was set except that I just needed to slip on a winter coat. As soon as I felt human again and ok to look at I decided to head to reception and ask them to organize someone to backpack with me, a guide or something.
"Hello", I said in what I hoped was my posh South African accent." Could you possibly help me? I would like to have a guide or just someone who shows people around the UK to backpack with me so I won't get lost...I'm willing to pay whatever amount I have to as long as its possible".
The plump rosy cheeked receptionist gave me a broad smile and replied," Oh yes dear...we have very few guides available but I'm sure we can find someone suited to you , now let's see...". She looked around in her files and typed on her computer for a while. While she did that I decided how cute I thought her accent was! "Ah", she replied." Derek is available, now dear if you just wait half an hour while reading something Derek will be here to pick you up. He is from Liverpool but he stays close during the week. He will take you where ever you want to go; now you can wait over there and sign this paperwork." I was grateful to the lady and sat on the stuffy couch and signed the papers. This Derek was taking his time that's for sure. I waited and waited, drank coffee and waited. I eventually fell asleep.
I Woke up when I felt someone jabbing me in my arm..."Hey (poke) are you Jade? (Poke)."HEY! Why are you poking me?", I replied." Well you were asleep girl and we should get moving, I'm Derek", he replied. For the first time I looked at him and then I died and went to heaven. He was gorgeous, Asian looking, longish black straight hair that fell in his eyes and a cheeky smile. Then I came back to life and left heaven. HE was a jerk that poked me."Ok fine lets go I am Jade, and please don't poke me awake again." "Ok sorry missy", he replied." don't call me missy, its jade". "Ok,'it's jade', lets go. And then he winked at me and the world spun. This was going to be a long backpacking trip.
Fuming mad, excited, and blushing I made my way to the little Beatle outside the airport with Derek.
