Charlie Sheen Roasted on Comedy Central

The Charlie Sheen roast was filmed over the weekend, with celebrities like Mike Tyson, Seth MacFarlane and Jon Lovitz all taking their shots at Sheen.
Charlie Sheen has already moved comfortably to the back burner of celebrity relevance. Following his public meltdown and subsequent firing from Two and a Half Men, Sheen enjoyed a brief period of public fascination and media coverage. He desperately tried to maintain contact with a curious public, but now that interest has waned. And whatever Sheen's current exploits, few will be aware of them because he has no interest from the entertainment media.

In fact, his Comedy Central Roast may have come too late to be of any real value to the network. Obviously, Sheen is perhaps the easiest roast target in the history of the medium, so it will still be funny for those who tune in. But he simply doesn't generate interest from most American content consumers.

Previously, Sheen's antics were newsworthy "because" he was the highest paid sitcom actor on television and because his show was one of the most successful of its era. That made Sheen relevant and interesting and people were inclined to pay attention whenever he did something newsworthy. The fact that all of Sheen's newsworthy activities were negative is irrelevant. People talked about him because he was on a hit television series, not because he threatened to kill his wife or trashed hotel rooms with prostitutes.

Now that the show has been taken away from Sheen, he's just a still-rich drug addict who is going to struggle to find new ways to succeed in show business.
