The Spirit’s Fate

"By the time Vyu got to the church, all the chairs has been filled. Every person and animal was there at four sharp. But, the spirits were missing. At least no one could see them.

"I say that we should-ribbit-carry on with the-ribbit- meeting." Mr. Hester, the frog, said by the time the sun struck 5:00 while his throat swelled bigger and smaller.

"No." Vyu said firmly. "This is their case and they should have a say in this."

"I don’t even think those spirits are even going to show." Mrs. Yuuna squeaked.

"Plus, if they did show, who here would say a truthful statement? It’s best if we start now while they aren’t present." Her husband added.

"We agree with the mouses. We should get getting going. After all, most of us have work to finish." Agreed the darwf couple.

Before anyone else could commit a comment, the spirits finally showed up. The floated in the door and hovered in the back of the room.

"SsspssppsSssPsspmssmsmsmM." They whispered.

"Well! What it’s going to do now after we waited so long. They can’t even speak!" Mrs. Crab was always known for having a bad temper, she’s has the right to be crabby, but now even Miirii* was frowning.

"Peter," Miirii*said, gently. "How did you communicate with them?"

The badgar blushed, that is if badgars can blush. He knew this question was going to come up sometime. "They….they taught me their language." He whispered.

"Peter!"

Now Vyu frowned even more. "I thought we had rules about minding our own business." Peter knew the rules. It was just that his curiosity got the best of him.

"Now Peter, listen. I understand if you want to communicate with them, but hiding it from us? That’s unexceptable! If you were to do something important, I would suggest that you tell us first. That applies to everyone." Miirii* rarely raises her voice, and when she does do so, people tend to listen. "Now that everyone is here, shall we get on with our meeting?"

"Alright." Said Vyu starting the discussion. "As you all know, the purpose of us all gathering here today is to decide if we should help the needed or stay out of it and don’t lead trouble toward us."

"I suggest we draw attention to the pros and cons before anyone chooses a side." Miirii* suggested, calm again.

"Good idea. The cons are that we might just draw trouble to ourselves. The pros are that we may finally make peace with the spirits and that no trouble would come to us……. If we win."

"That’s just another reason why we should stay out of this!" Mrs. JeeJee trumpeted. "If we win. And what are the chances of that? These spirits are bigger, stronger and they have powers we can’t even begin to imagine!"

"PssspSppMspsmsMSms." They put in.

"They said that they would be able to help. After all, they are as big and strong and as magical as Nesemis."

"Than what do they need with us? They have all the same qualities. Plus, they outnumber him." Tereesa pointed out.

"They are afraid that they won’t be able to defeat him. They need all the help they can get. If they lose, all will be lost." The owl hooted.

"I think we should help them. They are just like us. If we needed it, wouldn’t you think that we would appreciate help?" Peter accused.

"I would, but wouldn’t you think that they would keep to themselves if we needed help?" Mrs. Butterfly countered.

Peter didn’t reply. Afterall, he had nothing to say. He only fell back into his chair and glared at everyone there.

Finally, Vyu broke the ice. "Alright! I think we should vote. Before we do, Peter, does the spirits want to contribute anything?"

He looked over at them. "PsssmhrrhMMPrrsssMssMssMssmsmsmmB."

"They said that they would really appreciate our help but if we don’t, they understand. They’ve been listening to our concerns and they know we must be afraid to have Nesemis against them. They’re afraid too. But they just want to say that their fate is in our hands."

Someone let out a long whistle. Talk about crash and burn.

"Ok. Lets vote. Who says we keep to ourselves?" A large number of hands, paws and wings went up, including Miirii*’s. Vyu quickly counted those who thought it was a better decision. "All opposed?" Vyu quickly counted those too.

It was quiet for a moment then Vyu announced the results.

"It’s tied."

The civilians looked at each other wondering what will happen.

"But you didn’t vote yet Vyu!" someone shouted over the murmuring. Every head turned to him once again.

He thought back to what was said ever since Peter came over this morning. He took a deep breath, hoping what he was going to say next is the right decision.

"We’re going to war."
