Central Basin Offers a Solution to California’s Water Shortage

Central Basin Municipal Water District is concerned about California’s water shortage and is working to make the community aware of the options available and the need to shut off the tap. This public agency imports water from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to cities, companies and investor owned utility companies, thus providing water for over two million people.

Central Basin is looking to continue collaboration with community partners as they secure the regional water supply. Protection of the water supply is being focused through water conservation, drought education and recycling.

Central Basin has been a leader of water conservation for over eighteen years. They have helped many other communities develop conservation plans through their successful example.

There is a vital need to protect the water supply and the more recent increase in drought conditions has brought about a few key programs designed to secure the health and well being of residents. Central Basin recently launched a residence awareness campaign. May 19, 2009 was officially named the Shut your Tap Day. This day was used as a wide spread awareness day. Shut the Tap Day gave useful tips to residence. Here are some of those tips.

1. Shorten Showers by One or Two Minutes
Shortening your shower by such a brief amount of time can actually save thousands of gallons of water each day when practiced by the entire community. Getting the word out there can help preserve the water supply.

2. Check Sprinklers for Leaks
Leaking sprinklers can waste valuable water. The water that should be projected across the lawn pools in the area directly around the facet or the sprinkler. This can be easily stopped by changing the valves on the sprinkler or by replacing the sprinkler.

3. Use a Broom Rather than the Hose
Instead of using the hose to spray down the sidewalk, use a broom. This will save gallons upon gallons of water that could be used for more needful uses. If an entire community stops wasting water in this way, then the water source can be protected.

Central Basin offers many valuable resources to the community and is fighting to conserve water. California’s water shortage is a big concern and should be handled collectively by community leaders and by the public at large.
