Contrary to popular belief, not all fat is cellulite. Deposits of fat can accumulate all over the human body. However, cellulite is the fat that gets trapped under the connective tissues of the body. Our skin is quite elastic, so as to allow for expansion and contraction which is caused by the increase or decrease of fat and fluid levels. However, connective tissue which lies under the skin is not elastic at all, and the deposits of fatty cells which get stuck below it remain trapped there. These are known as cellulite deposits. This is visible in the form of bulges and bumps on the body – quite similar in appearance to the surface of orange peels.
What Causes Cellulite Accumulation
There are many reasons why cellulite accumulation occurs in certain people, whereas it doesn’t accumulate so much in others. The reasons include:
- Hereditary factors: This is when there is a family history of cellulite accumulation.
- Dehydration: When water is reduced from the body, the toxins from the body get accumulated in the fatty layers, adding to the cellulite.
- Unhealthy diet rich with carbohydrates and hydrogenated fats: This makes the problem of cellulite worse, because it just adds into the amount of fats in the body.
- Certain Medication: Different medicines such as the birth control pill, or diuretic pills can add to the accumulation of cellulite in the body.
- Sedentary lifestyle with little or no exercise: This does not allow the fat deposits on the body to move, and the layers of fat just add up.
- Smoking: This destroys the skin elasticity and damages the underlying connective tissues, which adds to the cellulite problem.
- High levels of stress: When someone is stressed, their body tenses up. This contracts the muscles and fibers, which restricts the circulation and causes the toxins to build up inside the body.
Fatty cells or accumulated fat in the body can be removed by various methods such as exercise. But these are the fatty deposits which have not become trapped under the connective tissues of the body.
These trapped fatty cells which are known as cellulite, cannot be removed by exercise alone. In fact, even thin girls often have a lot of cellulite on their bodies. It has been observed, that people who have exercised for a long time, actually do end up losing their cellulite. There are, therefore, different specialized methods of getting rid of the cellulite.

There are various methods of getting rid of cellulite that is trapped below the connective tissues. They are:
- Exercise: Nothing beats exercise. However, as mentioned before, it is not effective right away. However, the long term exercise routines have been known to reduce cellulite in many people.
- Mesotherapy: This is where a specialist doctor gives patients injections of substances such as minerals, amino acids and vitamins in and around the area where cellulite occurs. The patients take injections once a week for several months, and the results are held to be great.
- Body Wraps: This is also a very popular treatment for the reduction of cellulite. It causes the toxins and excess fluids from the body to be pushed out and simulate the lymphatic flow in the skin cells. This helps you reduce the cellulite, gain a better body shape and also provide a lot of relaxation.
- Massage Therapy: This is another method which is quite popular for getting rid of cellulite. The massage therapist actually simulates the skin and the underlying connective tissue layer during the massage and helps to move the fat cells deposited there. This helps reduce the cellulite in the body.
- Cosmetic Surgery: There are different kinds of cosmetic surgeries such as Liposuction, which can aid the removal of fatty cells. Often enough, though, they may not be able to remove the cellulite. There are however some laser treatments available for the removal of cellulite from the body.
