Cell Phone Towers in Hiding

Cell phone towers are everywhere.
Driving down any highway or street in America you will see some of the same things no matter where you are – electrical wires, telephone poles and of course, cell phone towers. You may have wondered why you see comparatively few cell phone towers given that everyone has a cell phone these days. Well, you’re just not looking close enough! Cell phone towers are often in hiding, disguised as trees, gas stations, even the steeples of churches! This has been done to preserve the look of areas where towers have been installed.

We need cell phone towers, obviously - we simply wouldn’t be able to get a signal otherwise. Because of this, cell phone towers have to be built at regular intervals alongside of highways. These towers are wireless and usually just one will be present in a given area. How many towers are required in a particular area is dependent on how many cell phone users are present. Different cell phone providers use different kinds of antennas, all of which may be on a single cell phone tower. This can lead to some very unattractive structures. This is why people began disguising cell phone towers.

Trees are the preferred disguise for cell phone towers. They come in every shape and size, usually in the guise of dominant tree species of the region - even cacti in the desert! Birds tend to shun these "trees" but insects can’t tell the difference and make their homes there.

There are some beneficial aspects to these "trees" which their natural counterparts lack. A cell phone tree is immune to diseases and parasites, trigger no allergies, keep their color forever and need no trimming. They can be placed anywhere they are needed and even provide shade! They need no water; for that matter, they don’t even need any soil, so droughts do not affect these cell phone trees.

Some have made the case that these cell phone towers disguised as trees are harmful to the environment around them. Those who make this claim will point out the fact stated above that birds will not nest in these "trees", drawing from this the conclusion that the birds are on to something that we as yet are not. Namely, they make the claim that cell phone towers are a hazard to the health of people living nearby. There has long been a debate about the possible health effects of power lines and electrical towers and their possible link to certain cancers. However, there seems to be no evidence that cell phone towers pose a risk to health. Opponents of cell phone "trees" do admit that these look far better than do the traditional cell phone towers, but are concerned about as yet unknown deleterious effects on the health of those unaware of their presence.

Cell phone towers are something which none of us can do without these days. If we can disguise these less than attractive structures as trees or other elements which are more aesthetically pleasing, it can preserve the look of the landscape - something most would agree is a good thing.
