Cayo Levisa: A Paradisiacal Key in the North Coast of Cuba
Pinar del Rio is a province that has many natural wonders. Viñales, Soroa, Las Terrazas among others can be mentioned, but it also has another one that is incredibly beautiful and peaceful: Levisa Key.
Located in the north coast of Pinar del Rio and to single 2 km of mainland, this small island (key, as it is known in Cuba) has only a superficial extension of 2.5 square kilometers but it has a magnificent beach that extends for all its north coast in a longitude of 2500 meters and with the magic of its relative isolation, this may be the final destination of those who love loneliness.
You arrive at Levisa Key in a craft from Palma Rubia (Blond Palm, municipality of The Palma), in a pleasant trip that can last around 20 minutes (there are two daily exits: one at 10 o'clock a.m. and the other one at 5 o'clock p.m.) in the shipment point there is parking with guard of security where you can leave the car and the price of the trip in ship is included in the reservation of the hotel if you have it, if you do not have reservation it does not matter, the price is not high.
Besides the excellent beach, without urbanizations and almost completely solitary although with lodging and comforts of first class - in the key, among other marine sports the diving and snokerling can be practiced in the coralline barrier that flanks it for the north to approximately 2000 meters of its coast, with well conserved coralline formations that have a massive colony of starfish (ygorgonias) and an abundant and varied marine fauna. These coralline reefs are part of the coralline barrier of The Colorado, one of the biggest in the world and the reefs are considered among the best in the Caribbean. A diving center exists with the experience and adapted equipment and that it also fulfills the international standards to guarantee a maximum security in an activity. This does not mean that the activity is exempt from excitement, though; and from where you can visit all of the 15 diving places that have been explored.
To visit Levisa Key the best thing to do is to hire the trip or gather information in the city of Pinar del Rio- the key is about 75 Km. far - or in any of the hotel facilities of Viñales, to 50 Km. to the south, although moving in car the trip can be made by your bill. Levisa Key is to about 150 Kms. to the west of Havana City and the highways that unite them are in good state.
During your holidays in Cuba, you will probably visit Pinar del Rio because of all the natural beauties that it holds.
