Tongue is one of the important sensory organs and is composed of muscles. The upper surface of the tongue is covered with papillae and taste buds. There are various reasons that cause some changes in the appearance and function of the tongue. Tongue ulcers are also known as aphthous ulcer. They are characterized by white colored patches or lesions on the tongue. These are generally painless. But when the ulcers grow and turn into blood red color, then they may bleed and cause damage to the tongue. Ulcers can cause a burning sensation in particular areas of the tongue. You may experience soreness and irritation, while eating or talking.

Causes of tongue ulcers are varied. Tongue ulcers are mainly caused due to unhealthy eating and drinking habits, as well as some medical conditions. Some of the causes of tongue ulcers related to health conditions are: Some of the causes of tongue ulcers are associated with unhygienic habits. They are as follows:
  • Improper way of brushing and cleaning the mouth
  • Use of toothpaste and mouthwash containing corrosive substances, such as alcohol
  • Eating excessive spicy, hot foods
  • Not having the food on time and at regular intervals
  • Excess consumption of tea or coffee
  • Smoking, drinking alcohol
  • Late night sleeping and not having enough sleep
Viral ulcer is also known as canker sores. It appears on the tongue due to no apparent reason. These ulcers are considered to be associated with fatigue or stress.
