Genetics: If you have some record that there are people in your family who had the symptoms, there are chances that you may get one too. However, it is not a must. It only indicates higher chance for you to develop panic attack than for others.

Character of the person: People who are overly concerned may have higher chances of developing panic attacks. The ones who are more relaxed may not suffer this at all.

Phobias: Any type of serious fear can trigger the attacks. As you may know, panic attack is a kind of fear. Therefore, phobias have big influence on whether you are going to have one.

External stimulants: You will have to avoid things that can stimulate the attacks including caffeine, nicotine or the drugs like marijuana or psilocybin. These chemicals can trigger the panic attacks.

Some misunderstandings: Since panic attacks have a lot to do with your thinking, mind misleading can provoke panic attacks. For example, self talk, mistaken beliefs, withheld feelings and lack of assertiveness can trigger the attack effectively.

Lack of confidence: The people who are introvert tend to have panic attacks easier than the outgoing and extrovert people. The ones who have passive style of communication may develop the disorder more easily than the active style of communication people.

Medications: Some of the medicines, regardless if they are prescriptive, can cause the attack for example methylphenidate or antibiotics like fluoro-quinolone.

Alcohol or drug withdrawal: Withdrawal of the alcohol or some medicine may cause the attack. This can be called withdrawal syndrome or rebound effect of the drug or alcohol.

The best thing to do is to study all the causes and ask yourself if you fall into the categories. If so, then you will have to take some of the precautions and techniques to keep you away from the panic attack.
