Causes of Dark Circles & How to Treat Them

Dark under eye circles have been associated with age and improper protection of the delicate skin around the eyes for decades and can become prominent on the lower eyelids.
Through research that has been completed, skin specialists have come to realize that there are a variety of factors which play a part in dark under eye circles and therefore, realizing the cause of the dark under eye circles is an essential part of developing a treatment plan that can be used to lighten the pigment of the skin effectively and create a natural skin tone through the lower eye lid, leading to youthful and healthy appearing skin.

A lack of nutrition and vitamins within the diet is one of the leading causes of dark under eye circles and therefore creating a natural and healthy diet can help to reduce the circles that have developed under the eyes. Ensuring that a diet is maintained that is high in vitamins E, C and K can be an effective way to reduce the risk of dark under eye circles developing. Therefore, fruits, vegetables nuts and other essential components of the diet should not be avoided. This healthy diet, full of nutrients, should be combined with an adequate amount of water which is consumed to promote the health of the skin.

Sun exposure is a popular culprit of dark under eye circles. As we gain exposure to the sun, the skin becomes darker as pigmentation occurs within the skin. The skin that is under the eyes is no different, but this delicate skin is often subject to a higher risk of hyper pigmentation and therefore becomes darker than the rest of the skin because of the melanin which is produced in this sensitive and delicate area. It is important to protect the entire face from sun damage, especially the delicate skin under the eyes.

Another thing to watch for through the summer months is dehydration which can cause dark circles under the eyes. There is very little fat content or layers in the delicate and thin skin which is under the eyes and therefore the skin can retain very little water, which translates into the skin being able to retain very little moisture. Once this area becomes dry, it can be difficult to rehydrate the skin, as there is such low fat content under the surface. Through the summer months it can be easy to become dehydrated when not enough water is consumed and we are sweating, or swimming, which can draw water from the body - causing dark under eye circles from a lack of moisture in the skin. The skin is one of the first places to lose moisture as we become dehydrated.

Knowing the causes of fine lines and dark circles under the eyes can help to choose the right treatment. Whether the treatment includes a cream which infuses moisture into the skin, or one that can help to lighten the pigmentation within the skin, learning the cause of the dark circles is an effective way to rid the face of them, for good!
