Catfish belongs to continental USA, and prefer still water for breeding. Unlike other fish, cat fish likes to stay at the bottom of the water body. The cat fish grows up to ten to fifteen pounds on an average, but you can also find them grow up to fifty pounds. So be prepared when you are there for catfishing. Cat fish is very alert and is easily distracted by light and sound.

Where to look for catfish
When you are out for catfishing, first thing is to choose the right time. Catfish can be found abundantly during the night time, so it is wise if you try catfish fishing in the dark. Since the catfish are very alert to sound and light, make sure you do not direct your light towards the water.

You should keep many rigs with you when you are out for catfishing. Catfish likes smelly bait, but you can even manage with a fresh one. You should first try the river bed; there is a better possibility of catching a catfish there. Ensure that the bait is not lying on the river bed; it should be slightly above the bed so that fish is attracted towards the bait. Catfish does not strike like other fish so you can wait for the fish to have its bait and then you can fix the hook.

If you do not get success at the bottom level of the water body, you can move slightly up to the next level. This way you can slowly move up the water layers. This will provide with a good chance of catching a catfish. While catching the catfish do not make any noise, this will distract them and guide them away from your hook. You can also use many rigs at one time at different level; this will reduce the time of fishing. Once you know the approximate level where you have caught the fish, you can redirect all your rigs to that level.

Mostly the catfish is small in size and easily manageable, but sometimes they can grow to big size and give a tough fight. So be prepared for that before you start pulling your hook.

Cat fishing techniques
Move to a deeper space in the water where disturbances and distractions are less. Middle of a lake or a pond is an ideal place. Wait for the water to become stationary before you put your anchor. Since you have to reach the lake bed, make sure you have enough string with you to guide the anchor to the bottom of the lake.

One of the good fishing tips is to make use of the good sense of smell of the catfish. Use your smelly bait to do this for you. If you forgotten to get the bait with you, you can catch some fish right there and cut it into small pieces. This will tempt the catfish more towards its prey. Put the hook to the top side of the bait, do not put it in the middle or bottom portion of the bait.

Once your bait is ready, slowly drop in the hook along with the bait in the direction of the current, make sure that the string is tight and you can feel any unusual movement in the hook. You should be sharp enough to distinguish between the normal movement and unusual movement of the hook. Once you sense the movements in the string that are not due to the water current, wait for approximately ten seconds and then start winding your fishing rod.
