Annie: Thank you very much, always good to know people are into a story. I hadn't heard of it but I'll check it out. I'm only new so not a lot of people have had a chance to read my stuff yet. Buzzle is just where I'm posting the stuff I write for fun.
Harry X: Sorry but yeah this is the last chapter before the epilogue. But I will start posting another story soon so hopefully you'll like that one just as much.
Estrella L: sorry but I am, though I hope you like my next story just as much.
Jam: thanks, hope you like this chapter
Mel: here it is
Lindsay: Thank you, and you never really know what Gregor was doing.
Aileen: Thank you for the compliment, and voila the next chapter.
Chapter twenty-four: A request
Scar handed the silver coins to the flower merchant. Today was an important day. He silently prayed to whatever god that existed for his plans to for once, went as he planned. He strode through the busy streets being careful to protect the flowers he held.
At the gate to her house he hesitated. What if she said no? What if wanted to end it?.. He shook his head. He could do this. He opened the gate and walked into the garden. Alistair greeted him happily and promptly slobbered all over his freshly polished boots. He sighed and patted Alistair's head. Rowan appeared and smiled at him.
"Lovely flowers" he said and walked out the gate whistling for Alistair. Alistair bounded after Rowan. The gate closed with a click. He was now alone in the gardens. Well no way to go but forward. He marched into the house and looked around. She wasn't anywhere downstairs. The image of her in the bedroom made him nervous. If she was there he'd never get the words out, at least not in a coherent and rational manner.
God it had only been a week since he last saw her. What would he be like if she broke up with him? He nearly left then and there, he didn't need to do this, he could wait. He turned to go and stopped himself. He wanted more and damned if he was going to give up without even trying. He ran up the stairs and looked around. "Lena?" he called.
"In here" she replied. Not the bedroom. He wasn't sure if that was a good or bad thing.
He moved past the bedroom to the upstairs library. Cassalena was lying on a pile of cushions reading. She looked up as he walked in and smiled. Oh dear god what if she said no?! He offered her the flowers suddenly feeling shy. "I uh... got these for you" he mumbled. She got up and took the flowers. She kissed him and turned towards a small desk. "They're beautiful, I love lilies." She said. He nodded and mumbled "Yep" She arranged the flowers in an empty vase.
He had to ask her now; it was the perfect chance, so why wasn't his mouth working. "Scar is something wrong?" Cassalena asked looking concerned.
"No" he said to quickly. She smiled and walked towards him.
"Are you nervous about something?" she asked wrapping her arms around his neck.
"Me, nervous, nah?" he said. Her smile widened. He glanced down her shirt. Bad idea! He lost his train of thought. What if she thought he was only after sex? What if she was only after sex? Oh hell. "Julian, you're blushing" His face burned brighter.
"Julian what are you up to?" he had to talk now or she'd get suspicious. He opened and closed his mouth a few times. She waited smiling patiently. "I uh..." Damn, how was he supposed to word what he wanted? "Yes?" he stuttered a few more times. "Are you proposing?" she asked suddenly suspicious. He quickly shook his head; he knew her thoughts on the institute of marriage.
"No, and yes. I don't want to be formally married, but I do. I want to live with you permanently. I want people to know you're mine. I want to have children and spend the rest of my life with you." He paused. That sounded awfully similar to a marriage proposal.
"So marriage without the formal paperwork?" she asked.
He nodded. "I also want to get a bigger house, out of the city, with lots of privacy and plenty of space." He added nervous. Please don't say no. Please don't say no. She kissed him. He was so surprised he didn't react. "Okay" She said . For a moment he was stunned then he smiled. His mouth covered hers and he lifted her off her feet and spun her around in his arms. She laughed. He kissed her again. He lifted her off her feet and tumbled her down onto the cushions stripping off her clothes until she lay naked beneath him. His girl. She beckoned him with a finger and he fumbled with his own clothes. He kissed her.
Two months later...
Cassalena's garden was full of people. Tables covered in white tablecloths were set up and laden with food and matching chairs were clustered nearby. An arch covered in tied ribbons stood in front of the fishpond. A collection of children ran amongst the adults.
Cassalena and Scar moved among the small crowd talking and smiling wearing the traditional wedding clothes with a twist: instead of wearing a full length white gown and veil Cassalena wore a flowing white dress that came to her knees and white flowers in her hair held up the strip of veil that barely covered her eyes; Scar had thrown out the traditional black suit and necktie and instead wore a loose white tunic and cream colored silk pants. Both were barefoot and tied together by a strip of red silk.
Rowan sat in a chair by the arch wearing his usual long sleeved tunic and pants. He was watching the children, though no one was sure how, just that he managed to stop them from misbehaving without moving.
Georgia and Matthew were standing together awkwardly both wearing their guild boss badges. Matthew managed to pass Georgia a box without being seen. She opened it and gasped. He whispered something and she made to hit him. He ran away and climbed the wall.
Cassalena frowned watching the interaction. "Why don't they just admit they're an item?" Scar asked. "Georgia's family are strict Cathaic's. They wouldn't accept Mathew." Scar shuddered remembering his one experience as a Cathaic. "What do you think he gave her?"
"I suspect he went to Fartuk street."Cassalena looked confused until he whispered an explanation.
The Duchess sat surrounded by her three lovers all of whom wore modest clothes that still managed to look risqué. They were talking to a very interested Mel. Zali kept stroking Mel's short hair and Precious was stroking the Duchess stomach. Sonya was on her knees talking with a street Jen was hiding under the table near them eavesdropping. Mel picked up a decorative rock from the garden and threw it casually under the table. Jen ran away, right into one of Cassalena's disinherited cousins who had managed to get back in contact.
Cassalena surveyed the crowd, there were a few friends of hers from her guild training, and Scar's family had turned up. Joe was playing hide and seek with the street children. Benny ran up to Cassalena and leapt into her arms. She shifted him to her hip and continued talking to Roman.
Kent's partner Enrique joined the Duchess conversation and there was a moment of silence followed by laughter. Kent however was climbing onto a chair and calling for everyone's attention. "Now I know this isn't an actual wedding, but it's close so as Cassie's older brother I feel it is my duty to say a few words, even though I haven't been around much. But I'm still your brother ad all I've ever wanted was for you to happy, and I see Julian makes you happy. I hope you have a long and happy life together. I give you my blessing." He raised his glass and drank everyone drank. "But if you break her heart I'll break every bone in your body" he added.
Scar nodded. "Fair warning, but what if she breaks my heart?" Kent smiled.
"Then I'll strand you both on an island until you work it out." Scar was about to protest when Cassalena held his hand. He glanced down to see her fingers intertwine with his. He sighed and spoke up "There's someone we need to remember today. Gregor." Several people looked at each other. "Without him none of us would be here and Yenko would have succeeded. So I propose a toast to Gregor."
Everyone raised their glasses and drank. "Thank you" Cassalena whispered.
"He was annoying and childish but he did save your life. I had to do something for him." Cassalena kissed his cheek.
"Still, thank you."
"Anything for you." He kissed her.
I shall post the epilogue soon...
