When pressure builds on the median nerve which passes through the carpal tunnel it exhibits carpal tunnel symptoms like numbness, pain and tingling sensation in the fingers, wrist and hand. This condition is termed as the 'Carpal Tunnel Syndrome'. Some patients may have to undergo corrective surgery in order to relieve pressure on the median nerve. However, it is not difficult to prevent the carpal tunnel syndrome. At the first sign of carpal tunnel symptoms in one or both of your wrists, start doing carpal tunnel exercises, which will help lessen the stress in your wrists. Yes, both of your wrists, because, more often than not this disease affects both wrists.

It is important to practices the following exercises regularly, as afflicted by the disease no amount of pain killers, which offer only temporary relief can get rid of the pain completely. Exercises for carpal tunnel are useful in preventing the carpal tunnel syndrome from occurring, as well as benefit those already suffering from it.

Carpal Tunnel Exercises for Wrists - Extend Your Hands:
  • You can start this simple carpal tunnel syndrome exercises by extending both of your arms straight in front of you.
  • Move the back of your palms and then fingers towards you.
  • Maintain this position for 5-10 seconds.
  • Relax and straighten your wrists and your fingers. Wait! The exercise is not over.
  • Continue the same exercise by holding your arms still straight out in front of you.
  • While maintaining your wrists straight, bunch your fingers to make a fist, and squeeze tightly.
  • You need to maintain the this position for 5-10 seconds before carrying on to the next step of the exercise.
  • Next, bend your wrists down towards your feet.
  • Do not exert undue stress on the wrists while you maintain your wrists in this position for 5-10 seconds.
  • We are at the end the exercise, so, relax and straighten both the wrists and your fingers and let your arms fall by your side.
  • Repeating the exercise 8-10 times. It is advisable that you take breaks during your work and go through the exercise as often as possible.
Carpal Tunnel Exercises for Wrists - Form a Fist:
This exercise is as simple as the earlier one and works wonders for people undergoing carpal tunnel treatment. However, if you find that it is painful to do, don't push yourself to complete the exercise.
  • We will start this exercise by making a loose fist with the right palm.
  • Next,Turn the palm side of the right fist up.
  • Place the left palm on the right fist and try to push the right fist downward.
  • The right hand and fist must resist the pressure exerted by the left palm and try to maintain the equilibrium. It is of utmost importance that the right wrist must be maintained straight.
  • After 5-10 seconds, stop exerting pressure on the right fist. This completes the first variation of the exercise.
  • We will start the next variation by turning the right fist so that the knuckle of right thumb is upside and repeat steps 3, 4 and 5.
  • Now we go for the last variation in the 'Make a fist' exercise.
  • Turn the right fist such that its palm-side is facing the ground.
  • Place the left palm on the back of the right fist across the knuckles and try to push the right fist downward.
  • Repeat the steps 4 and 5.
  • When you are finished exercising the right wrist, repeat the variations and steps by forming a fist with the left hand.
Anyone using repetitive wrist movements to complete his or her task is at risk of contracting this syndrome. People who are engaged as computer professionals and typists are prime candidates for this syndrome. Yoga for carpal tunnel syndrome is highly effective in preventing this disease from occurring.
