CARNIES CHAPTER 8!!!
I FINALLY GOT IT OUT!!!!!! I KNOW, I KNOW....IT'S TOO SHORT.
Ap, you always make me laugh.
Chapter 8
I walked outside and looked at the sun setting. The orange beams of light casted a fairy-tale like atmosphere over the whole camp. Everyone was still bustling around, trying to put everything they had set out up neatly so we could prepare to leave camp. I didn’t think we would, though. Nick’s dad was just too weird. We wouldn’t leave. No. He’d let me get caught with my father first. And with his lover, Marla, out of the picture, he’s going to be weird and stressed out.
"Kenna," I heard from behind me. I turned, and saw Nick jogging to me. I grinned.
"Watchya want?" I asked, voice lilting to a playful tone.
"Nothing. I was just wondering if you wanted to join me.." he said, and put his hands on my hips, pulling me while walking backwards, "to go watch a movie." I put my hands on his shoulders and grinned up at him.
"That’s right. We haven’t even had a movie date yet!" I faked indecision, and looked down. He seemed to fall for it. I looked back up with a smile on my face. "I’d love to."He grinned, still pulling me backwards, back hunched so he could kiss me. I saw Marla from behind him talking to Tony, and pulled away.
"Hey, Marla!" I called, and jogged up to them. Nick was right behind me, saying, "I didn’t know you guys were on speaking terms."
"Hey, Kenna!" she said cheerfully. "How’s it going?" she asked, tone changed as she asked about Nick.
"It’s all good." I said, and she relaxed. She was really stressed out about this.
"Where’s Joseph?" I asked.
"He’s been holed up somewhere all day." She said, shaking her head. Just as I suspected. We wouldn’t be leaving for a while.
Screams erupted from the far side of the camp, close to Rosa’s tent. We ran closer to catch a bit of what was going on, and heard flames crackling. My heart was in my throat until I saw Rosa come out unmarred.
"What happened?" I asked, while the others gaped at the blaze. Half of the tents in the camp or more were on fire.
"I was practicing with my fire act. Someone sneaked up behind me, and the gas spilled everywhere, making the fire spread. I swear, this has never happened to me before. Ever. Malachi is going to kill me."
"I don’t think it’s Malachi we should be worrying about." Joseph was going to kill us when he found out.
I heard sirens from the distance, and we backed up so the fire crew could park and survey the blaze.
"Is anyone hurt, that you know of?" a young fireman asked Rosa.
"No, I don’t think so. I think I was the only one over there."
"We’ll spread out and see," he said gently, then turned and yelled, "Men, spread out! Look for any trapped in the blaze."
He turned back to Rosa and said, "Do you have any idea what kind of chemical that was?"
"No. It’s a mixture my family formulated so we could do shows. It’s not supposed to be this flammable, though. I swear, this has never happened."
"It’s OK." He turned to a person in a lab jacket behind him and said, "Could you get a sample and possibly find out what type of chemical it is?"
Rosa and the guy stood there talking until the guy in the lab coat came rushing back, a grimace on his face. "It’s biodiesel. It’s gonna be getting hot in here."
We shot questioning looks at him, and he said, "The flames can get as hot as 200⁰F."
"Shit." Rosa said, head in her hands.
"Don’t worry. We can take control of it, right?" the guy asked the lab technician.
"We’ll have to hurry. Soon, they’ll become uncontrollable and take the forest with it."
"Shit." The guy muttered, and ran to the rest of the team.
A News van pulled up, crew coming out almost immediately.
They talked about the fire for about five minutes before noticing us, and coming over.
"Do you have any idea of how the fire started?" the woman asked.
We lied and said no.
Nick’s eyes flashed, and he pulled me out of the group, behind a tent far from the blaze.
"Shit." He said.
"What?"
"That’s live. On TV. Your dad."
"Oh, no."
We ran to our tent to hide out.
"Do you think he saw you?" Nick asked me.
"No, I don’t think so. I wasn’t there long enough. I don’t think. He really doesn’t watch too much TV."
------
Kenna’s dad sat down on his chair, beer in one hand, remote in the other.
Flipping through the channels, he saw flames in the background, and Kenna in the frame.
Rage went through him. She was standing close to that guy he’d told her not to date any more.
Tony.
He heard the name of the grounds, the Fairground close to the ice cream parlor.
His thoughts came back to when he was in the war. He knew he couldn’t come over there while news teams and investigators were there. He would have to wait.
---
ROSA’s POV
I looked at the fire, the fire I’d started, watching it spread. I looked at that one hot firefighter, and the fire. I took a step forward, and he seemed to know what I was thinking, saying, "No, there’s nothing you can do. All you can do is watch and pray."
"What are you talking about!?!? Do you know who you’re talking to!? I know what I’m doing! I can figure out what’s wrong. I was a fucking chemistry major!" I said, fighting at his arms. He had an iron grip on my waist. He turned me around to face him and shook my shoulders, trying to knock sense into me.
He was only a few centimeters away, and even though the fire had the air hot, I could feel something even hotter between us. His baby blues pierced my eyes, and I pulled his head closer to mine, fiercely claiming his mouth on mine. He groaned, pulling closer, and I could feel the hold weakening. I wasn’t using him in the least. As a matter of fact, I think I wanted a date. But, claiming my moment, I dashed to the fire, to my tent, then to my mini lab.
I got a sample of the chemical blend, and worked to find a blend to neutralize it.
TWO DAYS LATER
The investigators were starting to leave. I came from the opening to the tent, tied it shut, and went back to the bed where Nick was lying, trying to sleep.
"They’re leaving." I said. "I don’t think dad saw. He didn’t come."
"Good." Nick said, and pulled me close in his arms. I put my cold feet on his leg, and he jerked.
"How come your feet are always freezing?"he asked.
"How come you’re always warm?" I smarted back. I felt him chuckle behind me, and dozed off.
---
"Kenna!" I heard Tony yell. I leapt out of bed, disturbing Nick in my wake.
"Wa’s wrong?" he asked drowsily.
"I don’t know. Come on. Get dressed, hurry!!" I said, pulling on a clean pair of pants. We’d forgotten about the curtain rules in our rush, and I saw a flash of Spider Man boxers. "Spider Man?" I asked. He looked down.
"What? He’s cool," he said. I shook my head at him, grinning.
"Come on. Let’s see what Tony needs."
"AAAAAGH!!!!!" Tony yelled, running around in circles.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"Running!! Help!!"
"Tony, there’s nothing there. Are you okay?"
"HEEEELLLLLLLPPPP!!!" he yelled.
"Fine. I’ll get you to stop running," I said, and tackled him.
"Hey!" he said, squirming, trying to get back up.
"Nick! Help me!" I said, and he ran over to me. We picked the struggling Tony up, my by his feet, Nick arms.
"Stop! Put. Me. Down!" he yelled, and I glared at him.
"What’s wrong with him?" the still drowsy Nick asked.
"I have no clue."
"I-I saw a g-guy with a s-s-sawed off sh-shotgun. He attacked me, but when I r-ran, he glared after me like I w-was dead meat."
"Do you have any clue who it was?"
"I didn’t get to see his face."
"Okay." I said, and dropped him.
"Hey!"
"What? You said you wanted me to put you down." Nick dropped him, too.
Nick came up beside me, and whispered, "You know he’s gay, right?"
"I kinda figured when he was acting like such a baby." I said, and he chuckled.
OK this is as fast as I could type it…I dunno if ya’ll will like it. I haven’t written in a while, LOL. COMMENT AND TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK!!!! :D The next one will have TONS of DRAMA & Romance!! YAY!
