Beautiful roses are a must have for any garden. These beautiful, delicate and fragrant flowers that are available in a wide range of hues are a value-addition to the garden. Rose bushes are flowering shrubs that belong to the genus Rosa and there exist over hundred species of wild roses, majority of which originate from the northern hemisphere and mostly from temperate regions. Owing to the beauty of the flowers and the security provided by the thorns, roses are one of the most favorite garden shrubs. Here is list of all the things that will help you while caring for Rose bushes in your garden.

Adequate Water: Roses need lots of water however, not to an extent where it clogs up the soil and hampers the aeration. Hence water should be provided in adequate quantities according to the soil type. Roses should be watered in such a way, that they always have sufficient amount of humidity in the soil and yet allow room for aeration and keep the soil airy and loose. Preferable do not water the leaves since the humidity on leaves can promote rose diseases and also washes away the insecticides or pesticides sprayed on the leaves.

Sunlight: Roses require adequate sunlight for optimum growth. A garden, which provides full sun for the roses, is an ideal location. However when full sunlight is not available, locations with partial shade can also suffice and promote healthy growth.

Soil: Rose plants require a lot of nutrients from the soil. A fertilizer that is rich in phosphorus will do wonders for your rose bushes since phosphorus promotes the blooming of flowers. However, use the phosphorus rich fertilizer only when the first buds appear. In the early stages use a nitrogen rich fertilizer to promote the growth of roots and leaves. In addition to being rich in nutrients, the soil also has to have a loose consistency in order to promote drainage of excess water and adequate aeration of the soil.

Pruning: Pruning is an important step in caring for rose bushes and roses need to be pruned every year. Pruning helps to get rid of the old and diseased plant material and facilitates new blooms in the growing season. There are some thorns which puncture the branches and are thrown back while pruning hence it is advisable to use protective gloves and goggles.

Weed Control: Weeds can hamper the growth of your precious rose gardens. Weeds compete with the rose plants and hence rob the rose plants of the essential nutrients and water from the soil. To prevent this, you can use a layer of organic mulch, which is nothing but a protective covering of rotting vegetable matter spread to reduce evaporation and soil erosion. The organic mulch will also enrich the soil since with time it will be converted into compost.
