Caregiver Support

Caregiver support is a must for every person who acts as a care provider for the elderly, infant or disabled members of the family...
Being a caregiver is not as easy as it sounds. At times it can be a lonely and tiresome task where you are loaded with various emotions and stressful situations. You not only have to take of your loved ones but also yourself. And this is where many people go wrong. They seemed to devote their entire time and sometimes even life to the sick person only to realize that they themselves need someone to provide care. According to some research studies one out of four Americans are caregivers who look after their children, elderly person, or physically and mentally challenged person in a family or nursing home set up. But most of the caregivers have reached a stage known as caregiver burnout due to lack of support. This is dangerous for the caregiver and his or her loved one as well.

Caregiver Burnout

Caregiver burnout is a condition in which a caregiver is so exhausted mentally as well as physically that he cannot provide the loved one with any more care. Sometimes, caregivers are so annoyed and frustrated that they take out their anger on the loved one which can affect their relationship. Many times they have to juggle between all their daily responsibilities and caregiver duties to an extent that it takes toll on their health. It's not only that their physical health is at stake but their mental and emotional health also suffers. They have to undergo myriad emotions such as grief, sadness, fear, and hope all at the same time. This emotional chaos can lead to complex feelings on which a caregiver rarely has any control. A caregiver even feels bad about breaking the commitment and not doing his job efficiently that further leads to more trauma. All this happens because a caregiver himself is not provided with the adequate support that he needs.

Support for Caregivers

Caregiver support groups are becoming very popular these days. As the name suggests, caregiver groups are characterized by a gathering of caregivers where they share each others' problems and experiences. It gives them a chance to know about the problems faced by other caregivers and how they cope with it. Apart from joining such groups caregivers should learn to take care of themselves that would save them from caregiver burnout. Given below are some of the things that every caregiver should follow to be an efficient caregiver:

Understanding Self Limits
A caregiver must understand that he cannot do everything by himself. Many caregivers get frustrated and tired because they want to do everything by themselves for the loved one they care for. But as human beings we have certain limitations that every caregiver should identify and shouldn't try to be the messiah.

Planning In Advance
It is important for a caregiver to plan his weekly schedule in advance so that he doesn't have to worry about last minute changes. This allows him to arrange for someone else to take care of the loved one for some time and finish the tasks at hand in the stipulated time frame.

Asking For Help
It is also suggested that a caregiver share his problems with his friends and relatives and make a list of people who are ready to offer help in terms of spending some time with the sick person. Whenever the caregiver has urgent work or wants to take a break or relax he can call the people who wishes to offer help. He may even appoint a patient care technician for few days or hours.

Take Out Personal Time
A caregiver must take out some time for himself. If not every day then at least every alternate day. The process of care giving should not affect his social and professional life as it can endanger his psychological health. This way he will also get a chance to do whatever he wants and would not feel obligated.

Visiting a Doctor
Yes. A caregiver must see his family doctor regularly. Many times if the loved one is suffering from a disease or some sickness, the surroundings become somewhat morbid. It is also possible that a person may catch infection or virus from the loved one. So to avoid any unfortunate event, a caregiver should visit the doctor regularly.

Understanding the Loved One
A caregiver should also understand the loved one and his impairment properly so that he can provide appropriate patient care. It is important especially when the loved one is suffering from some psychological problems. A caregiver must have complete knowledge about the disease or illness so that he can take better care of the loved one.

Leading a Healthy Lifestyle
A caregiver must pay attention to his own health and wellness and follow a good diet along with regular exercise regimen. It will give him strength and energy to take care of the loved one. He must also relax often and try to be calm, patient, and stress free. This prepares him to face any good or bad situation.

These insights are sure to provide you with effective care giving management techniques. It will help you manage your daily chores along with care giving and without feeling exhausted or frustrated. My last advice for caregivers would be to never lose hope in life and keep praying, things will get better.
