Social work is a suitable career for people who have an intense desire of improving people's lives. Social workers play a very important role in helping people deal with relationships, family, or individual problems in their daily lives. They assist the public who suffer from a disability, a dangerous disease, or a social problem like joblessness, inadequate housing, or any kind of addiction. They also help families who have been through severe domestic fights due to child or spousal abuse. They are responsible for conducting related research, urging for bettered services, designing public associated systems, and planning or developing policies. Some may even particularize in serving a specific population or work setting. In such a way, they carry out numerous functions which are extremely beneficial to the society. There are many kinds of social workers who provide their services to various sectors in the society.

Child, family, and school social workers render their services to guide and meliorate the social and psychological functioning of children and their families. They also play a significant role in the children's academic education. They are responsible for helping single parents, assisting parents adopt a child, and also providing homes for people and children from the neglected class. Some social workers are specialized in rendering services to senior citizens. Such social workers administer 'support' groups for children who's parents are growing old, and suggest senior citizens or their family members in problems related to living accommodations and transportation. They also conduct employee assistance programs, through which they help individuals cope up with job-related pressures, or with issues that have an adverse effect on their work quality.

Social workers who work in schools may act as mediators between families of students and the school administration. They counsel with parents and guardians, teachers, and school staff to ensure a student is performing well in his academics and recognize their personal potential. They also handle issues such as misdeed, hooky, and more serious problems such as pregnancy in teenage years, and educate teachers in ways to handle difficult students. School social workers are progressively initiating workshops to the entire class, which motivate them and make them study hard. Such social workers who handle the above obligations serve in service offices, schools, or state governments.

There are social workers who also work in the medical and public health fields, and give psychological guidance to people who suffer from dangerous diseases and disorders like cancer or AIDS. They also counsel family caregivers to help patients preclude other diseases after they are discharged from the hospital. They motivate patients to live a healthy life by educating them about the causes and prevention of diseases. Some may serve in interdisciplinary groups which assess specific kinds of patients. They are generally employed by hospitals, health care facilities, or local governments.

Some social workers work in fields like psychological health and substance abuse, wherein they treat patients who suffer from emotional disorders, or any kind of addictions that relate to alcohol, tobacco, or drugs. They manage services that include personal and group treatments, outreach and education on aftereffects of addictions, rehabilitation, and crisis intervention. Their main aim is to help patients return to their normal life.

The minimum requirement for getting into the social work field is a bachelors degree, however, some positions may expect a higher or an additional degree in social work. A masters degree or some advanced courses in psychology and sociology may be an added advantage. The competition for getting a job in the social work sector is very tough, especially in the urban areas. However, job prospects in villages and rural areas are high.

With a rapid increase in the rate of addictions, abuses, and mental problems, there is a huge demand created for people in social work. If one has a strong inclination towards working for the public, a career in social work is surely the best and most satisfactory option available.
