Careers in Clinical Psychology
Clinical psychology is considered to be the largest branch of psychology. Clinical psychology deals with people suffering from severe mental and psychological problems. The role of a clinical psychologist is to assess, diagnose, understand and treat patients who are facing serious mental health problems like bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia, etc. They work in public hospitals or in private settings, along with medical professionals like psychiatrists, because clinical psychologists are not entitled to prescribe drugs or medications.

Educational Qualifications
To begin a career in clinical psychology, it is necessary to do a master's degree in clinical psychology. While some colleges or universities take students who have a bachelor's degree in a different field, majority of educational institutions prefer students who have gained a bachelor's degree in psychology. Doing a post-graduate diploma in clinical psychology would also be beneficial for one's career. However, to work as an independent clinical psychologist, it is very important to do a Ph. D. (Doctor of Philosophy) or Psy. D. (Doctor of Psychology) in the field of clinical psychology. Students who are interested in Ph. D. would be more involved in research work, whereas Psy. D. doctorate programs focus more on practical work.

Clinical Psychologist Careers
The courses in clinical psychology teach the students about human psychology and how biological, environmental and psychological problems affect human behavior. With the help of theoretical knowledge, clinical psychologists try to understand the condition of a patient. Along with knowledge about different aspects of clinical psychology, this profession also needs a little creativity. As every human being is different, the psychologist has to find different approaches for diagnosis and treatment for effective recovery of the patient.

The job of a clinical psychologist involves understanding the root cause of the patient's problems by conducting certain physical and laboratory tests, along with tests that assess personality, intelligence, etc. Other ways for doing this is by taking interviews and giving questionnaires.

Clinical psychology offers a variety of career opportunities. One can opt to work with little children, adults or old people. One can become a specialist in treating people suffering with substance abuse or addiction, chronic pain, life threatening diseases, etc. Clinical psychologists can choose to work in hospitals, schools, mental health institutions, colleges or at independent clinics.

Another clinical psychologist career that one can opt for is teaching. A clinical psychologist can become a professor of students of clinical counseling at colleges or universities. Here, they have to teach children different concepts of clinical psychology and also guide and supervise them in conducting research.

One of the clinical psychologist careers that specializes in treating people addicted to drugs or alcohol is called clinical health psychology. These psychologists help patients to relieve them from addiction and encourage them to lead a normal and healthy lifestyle.

In recent years, a new specialization has been added to the variety of careers in clinical psychology, which is known as geropsychology. This field of clinical psychology focuses on the mental and psychological health problems that come with age. Doing research work is also an option in the enormous field of clinical psychology.

Clinical psychologist careers are definitely challenging and rewarding, but at the same time are also very exhausting. On one hand, one gets the satisfaction of helping other human beings, while on the other hand, this can be very tiring and frustrating, as one would have to deal with patients who have different mood swings and behavior. A person who is thinking about beginning a career as a clinical psychologist should have good communication skills and loads of patience.
