How to Remove a Car Stereo

These instructions tell you how to remove a car stereo that is installed with clips, and one that is held in place with screws.

Removing a Car Stereo with Spring Mounted Clips
Several cars have stereos mounted on four small clips, which hold the stereo in place.
The procedure to remove such a stereo is simple and can be completed in a matter of minutes.

• Invest in DIN tools to remove a car stereo mounted on clips.
• The U-shaped tools have small poles that can be inserted in the clips of the stereo.
• Upon inserting them, you will hear a 'click', and the stereo can then be easily removed.
• The cable of the antenna is now to be unscrewed, which is at the far end, close to the passenger side.
• Now disconnect the wiring harness connector at the back of the stereo, that holds all the wires connected to the stereo, held in place by a wiring clip. These can be connected to the new car stereo.

Removing a Bolt-On Car Stereo
As the name suggests, a bolt-on car stereo is one that is held in place or bolted by a couple of screws. This procedure is slightly longer than the previous one, but is still simple.

• You may only require a flat headed screwdriver for a bolt-on car stereo removal, though this procedure is slightly longer.
• Begin by removing the face plate to be able to remove the screws that keep the stereo in place. To do so, you have to pull the face plate firmly but gently. There are also certain tools to remove the face plate, which you may invest in, that enable its removal without any damage. You may also use a flat head screwdriver to remove the face plate but be careful because you may end up cracking it in an attempt to remove it.
• After removing the face plate, you may be able to locate the screws underneath the ashtray or the glove box. Remove the screws that hold the stereo in place. You may use a magnetic screwdriver to do so, so that the screws don't fall and get misplaced. The stereo can now easily be removed.
• The cable of the antenna is to be unscrewed, which is at the far end, close to the passenger side.
• Now disconnect the wiring harness connector at the back of the stereo, that holds all the wires connected to the stereo, held in place by a wiring clip. These can be connected to the new car stereo. The car stereo can now be completely removed.
