Car Muffler Repair

How difficult car muffler repair is depends on the degree of damage to the muffler as well as the exhaust pipe. Read on to find out more.
Seen those guns and pistols with mufflers in flicks? Oh! I am sure you have, right? So these mufflers are (do I need to say that?) supposed to muffle or eliminate the sound completely when the shot or shots are fired. Similarly, there is a mechanism to nullify and eliminate the sound emanating from a vehicle engine, which is called a muffler, located in the exhaust of the vehicle, cars for instance. The name itself suggests what does it do. Now imagine if this muffler is not in a proper condition, wouldn't your car announce loudly that beware, I am coming! In that case, to reduce that level of sound, we will require car muffler, right? Check then as to how to reduce this sound of (atrocious) music!

Car Muffler Basics

Before we get down to repairing the muffler, lets know the basics. I am sure most of you have seen the exhaust or the muffler of your car. Inside this car exhaust system there is a set of tubes and these are made in such a way that they create reflected waves either interfering with each other nullifying each other. The sound waves and exhaust gases enter en route the center tube and bounce off the back wall of the muffler. These are reflected with the help of a hole in the main body of the muffler. Then these waves and gases pass through several holes in another chamber where they are diverted. Eventually they are let out from the last pipe out of the muffler. Resonator is another important part of a muffler.

Car Muffler Troubleshooting

Well, your car is letting out a horrible sound, thanks to the muffler, which is not in a good shape. Here is tackling some car muffler problems.

#1
For starters, you need to allow the vehicle to cool down. After it cools down you start your work then. Begin by checking the muffler straps for making sure that they are in place, properly. These are also known as exhaust hangers and these hold the muffler in place, connecting it to the bottom of the vehicle. If these straps are broken as a result of wear and tear or have become lose, it will cause the muffler to rattle and shake. These will have to be either tightened or there will have to be car muffler replacement as the need be. It would be good to have an idea of the various car noises and what they mean, to understand what exactly is wrong.

#2
We move on to the next thing if the exhaust hangers are intact. You may need to now open the muffler and check for deposits of debris, soot, rust or any other thing which might obstructing the proper functioning of the muffler and adding to the noise quotient.

#3
It is possible that the exhaust pipe itself is broken, warranting repair. So to deal with this before you take it to a garage, may be you can do a few things. Check out the pipe. In case it is going to break and fall off, try removing that hanging part by bending and twisting it till it breaks off. Do not think of fixing it back. By any chance you are not able to break off the hanging portion, untwist a wire coat hanger or any wire used by mechanics and wrap an end around the hanging portion. Then what you have to do is to fasten the other end at the bottom of the car. Wrap it around an immovable part of the car, except for the drive shaft. Let that be like that. This is a makeshift option which will save your repair cost, prior to the mechanic taking a look at it.

Thus, you can see why these mufflers are important and why they have to be periodically checked. If the mufflers do not work properly, the car will not only emit annoying noises, but toxic gases as well. Moreover, the car would not run properly and it will also add to the pollution. Hence car muffler repair is very important.

So I am sure now we know the importance of this chamber of silence, where noise does not resonate! I sign off here!
