Can You Work From Home and Still Be Successful?

You betcha! But it may not come automatically, and it may be easier for some folks than others. Even when you have plenty of money to get started with. Why? Because being able to work from home successfully requires three things: self-discipline; a solid business idea; the right resources and support.

Let's look at self-discipline, possibly the most important of all three requirements. Why should be obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people never identify this as an important aspect of their success. Simply stated, it takes lots of self-discipline to establish a good business plan for your new idea, figure out how much time and money it will take to implement, create an appropriate work schedule, and then stick to it. It sounds easy but actually requires quite a bit of skill in terms of organization and execution. So be sure you have what it takes to get the job done in a timely manner if you're going into a home-based business.

The second most important factor is what type of business you choose. You may have a fantastic new idea, but selling new-fangled chopsticks in the corn-growing states of Middle America may not be the most lucrative scheme. Do your homework and choose something that is backed either by marketing statistics as being a viable business, OR by a company with a proven track record (should you go into an industry like network marketing, for instance). And, equally if not more important, choose something you can really "get into." Remember, you are going to work from home, and you don't want your time spent there ending up feeling like a boring burden. If it does, you won't want to stay around to get the job done and you'll end up spending your days at Starbuck's. You gotta love what you do!

Last - and not as important as the first two - but certainly not least: you must avail yourself of the support and resources necessary to make your work from home effective, enjoyable, and profitable. This means having the physical space and equipment to accommodate your new job, having your family or roommate and friends honor your schedule and need for privacy, and having the proper network of providers for the materials, products, or services you need to run your business.
