(Ian's POV.)
I hate coming here every day. Mom thinks it's good for me to be around other people who are deaf, but it's not. It's harder. Whenever somebody at school asks to do something, I have to say no because I'm going here. It's not even worth it. I'm the only person in my age group. The closest people to me are either 16 or 24. I'm a 19 year old senior. I just wish mom could understand that I need to move on with my life.
When I was 16 I was in a car accident. My best friend Tommy had been driving down the highway in the middle of an ice storm. We were on our way home. A semi drove past us and a gust of wind threw us off the road. Tommy died, I smacked my head repeatedly. I woke up with a concussion and had lost the ability to hear. At first, I was so upset. I felt like my life was over. I missed a lot of school that year and ended up being held back. That's why I'm still a senior in high school. I should be in my first year of college, but it was so hard to get back to life. I was afraid of the silence. I withdrew from everybody. Eventually, I learned to cope, but I still get depressed sometimes, but I'm talking to a psychiatrist and taking some medication when I need it. It's helped a lot.
Anyway.... I'm sitting here in the Community Center. (after school and on weekends, they open the conference room for the ASL people in the area to come and spend time together.) I hate it here. I don't want my mom to worry about me. I'm just a loner. I have been since Tommy died. I have two pretty close friends, Zach and Drake, but other than that, I'm pretty much not a people person. I'm thinking about how to tell my mom that I don't want to come here anymore when I look up and see the most beautiful girl I have ever seen.
Her hair is long and dark, almost as dark as mine. She's the tallest girl I've seen in a while. Probably 5'10? Her lips are so full and look like I could kiss them for the rest of my life. Their smooth looking and a soft pink. Then, in the middle of this, I look up and see her eyes. My heart almost stopped. Her eyes were such a beautiful crystal blue. Her dark eyelashes framed them beautifully. She was looking back at me and I felt like I could spend the rest of my life with her. I was about to get up and talk to her when her attention was turned back to Mrs. Couple (the front door secretary). I realized that she was here to volunteer, which means that she would be here more than just this once. She was being introduced to Johnny Wilkinson.
Johnny Wilkinson is possibly the sweetest boy I have ever met. He's been here since he was two, we both came here around the same time. It was a little weird to be learning the same signs as a person fourteen years younger than you, we eventually became close. He's like a little brother to me. I usually bring him out to the ice cream shop in the summer, and during the winter, we go to the gas station and get some hot cocoa. I love him like a brother. I was happy the new girl got to be with him. Johnny loves meeting new people, and he tries so hard with his signing and trying to talk that when somebody new comes in his life, he likes to show them all of what he can do.
The new girl sat down and started signing to him. 'She was really fluent, maybe she's deaf too.' I'm thinking about this when I see Johnny run across the room and grab a book. Those books are hardly ever used, not many people have the patience to read to deaf children who don't know how to lip read. I was amazed at what I saw though. Johnny practically crawled onto her lap he was so close to her. They laid the book on the floor in front of them.
New Girl would read a sentence, turn to Johnny and sign whatever she had just said. It was incredible. I saw understanding in Johnny's eyes, something I hadn't ever seen when a child as young as him was being read to. By the time the book was over I was mesmerized. I watched her tell Johnny she had to go now. I jumped up and waited by the front doors. Hoping to get to talk to her. She walked down the hall and waved to me. I said "Hey, hold on a sec." and I noticed her stop dead in her tracks. I don't think she expected me to talk. She said hi, and signed to me. "You don't have to sign to me. I read lips." I told her. She said okay and looked a little bit unsure. I told her about how good of a job she did with Johnny. Her face lit up and I couldn't believe how beautiful she was when she smiled like that. We were talking for a couple of minutes when she suddenly turned and left. I was starting to feel a little bit confused when she turned around laughing. She had forgotten I couldn't lip read if her face wasn't towards me.
I got home that night and couldn't help but think about her. I wanted to know more about who she was.
The next day, she came back, and the day after that, and the day after that. She came everyday for two weeks. We still hadn't talked since that first day and it was killing me. I needed to know her. I waited for her again today. She was walking by me when I stopped her and asked her "would you like to go out to dinner sometime?" Her eyes got big and she stuttered over the words "I'm sorry, but I don't think that's such a good idea." She turned and walked away from me. I felt heartbroken. It took all of my courage to ask that. When I got home that night, I decided to show her that I was serious. I asked her again and again for the next week until she finally looked me in the eyes and asked
"Why?"
"Because I want to know you." I told her.
"Yeah, but why? Why do you want to know me?" She asked.
"Because of the way you treat Johnny, you are such a great person when you're with him. Listen, if your saying no because I'm deaf, just tell me, I can handle it." I told her.
Her eyes opened wide and filled with tears. "NO!!" she said, "That's not it at all, please don't think that. I would never turn you down because of that. I don't care if your deaf or if you had perfect hearing. I'm not like that." She said.
"Then why won't you go out with me?" I asked.
"It's one thing to be a great person with a five year old. Its another to be out with you. You may not see it, but I'm a fairly private person. I'm shy." She told me with her eyes looking at the ground.
"Please, just trust me and say yes? If you don't like it, we never have to do it again and you can avoid me like you've been doing." I tried to convince her.
She looked towards the door then back at me. "Okay, one date." She said before she left.
Before I whooped for joy I called after her "Wait! What's your number? I can text you where to meet."
She bit her lip and came over to me and wrote it on my palm.
(Marissa's POV)
I can't believe I just gave him my number! He's obviously just pulling my chain, nobody as beautiful as him would ever be interested in me.
I walk into the kitchen and see Austen playing on the table while mom was doing her taxes. "It'll be weird when Vanessa has that baby, we'll never see Aussy here." I told her. Vanessa was about seven months pregnant and there have been some complications. With Ryan having to work all day, Vanessa can't be picking up Austen and cleaning up after him all day, its too hard on her body, so my mom and I volunteered to babysit for her. My mom watches him when I'm at school and volunteering, then I take over until Ryan comes to pick him up.
"Anny Issa!! Gamma pwayed bwoks wif me 'day". (Translation; 'Auntie Marissa! Grandma played blocks with me today!') Austen told me.
"She did? Did you have fun?" I asked him in my surprised voice.
He shook his head adamantly. "YES."
"you ready for some spaghettis?" I asked.
"uh oh, oh no!" he said.
We play a game with him, you know, uh oh spaghetti's? Now whenever hears spaghetti's he cries out uh oh, oh no! it's the cutest thing I've ever seen.
I smile and lift him from the table. I hear a beeping coming from my pocket. Taking out my cell phone, I see that I have one new text. I open it and see "Hey, this is Ian, does tomorrow at 6 work for you?" I thought about it, tomorrow was Friday, so I didn't have to worry about staying out late.
"Mom, would you mind if I went out tomorrow night?" I asked.
"What's tomorrow night?" she asked in return.
I blushed and said "I have a date".
"You do not! Who is he? Is he cute? What does he look like? Can I meet him?" she rambled on
"MOM! Stop. Can I go?" I asked.
"Of course. It really is about time you moved on honey." She told me.
I texted him back 'yes' and went on with my day.
Thank you so much to..
