Can You be Self Employed and Work in a Salon?

Looking for a way to express your passion on nail art? Why not become a nail technician and be self employed in a nail salon? Find out ins and outs of nail care industry.
When you are looking into your options as a nail technician, one which you may not be aware of is that you can be self employed but still work within a salon environment. This is great for those who have worked for themselves but who have found it to be a little too isolating. It can be boring without the added stimulation that you get from working with colleagues. So why not still work independently but in a salon surrounded by other people? By renting out space in a salon you get the best of both worlds!

How it Works

Basically you pay a salon owner either weekly or monthly rent and you get to use a little space for your business. This is usually in the same area as the hairdressing section and so you are practically surrounded by people all of the time. You get the benefit of having people to talk to and also of drawing in more potential customers. As the customers come in and notice that there is a nail technician service there too, it is likely that they will ask about your service.

This works as an advantage both to you and to the salon owner. If people find out that the salon is also offering nail treatments it could attract more people and the hairdressers will also gain more custom as well as yourself. So it is mainly a win-win situation. However, there are some potential downsides that you should become aware of.

The first potential negative is that your colleagues might not be too thrilled about you working with them. They could think that you are in the way or they just may dislike the fact that nail services are also being offered. Whatever their reasons, some salon staff can be a nightmare to work with and so you may not necessarily get the friendly, chatty company that you hoped for!

You also have to find out everything you need to know about working for yourself. You will need to sort out tax and National Insurance payments with the Inland Revenue. You should also look into getting public and liability insurance too. This will help to protect you if anything were to happen. The salon will likely have their own insurance but it might not cover you. So it is better to be safe rather than sorry!

Another thing to think about is that you should plan your business properly. You need to think about the services that you will offer, the space available to you and how you will attract more customers. If you do not bring in much business then the salon owner will not let you stay. So you need to make it a success if you are to stay working within a salon environment. Some salon owners may require you to have some experience too. So if you have just finished your education then you may not be able to get a position like this.

Overall there really are so many things that you have to think about before you rush out and ask your local salon about working there. Make sure that you have the finances to set up your little desk in the salon and also make sure that you have a good business plan too. If you follow these tips you have a good chance of being a successful self employed salon nail technician.
