Yeast infection is a fungal infection caused due to overgrowth of fungus on the body. The most common type of infection is the Candida infection caused by a fungus called Candida albicans. Candida fungus is present in the body of human beings in adequate amounts in the mouth, bowel, genitals and digestive tract. When the fungus is present in small amount, it is harmless. However, certain factors lead to excess growth of Candida resulting in infections. It is a common knowledge that Candida infections are found mostly in women. However, men can also suffer from it.

For e.g., excess and prolong use of antibiotics and use of condoms containing nonoxynol-9 and low immunity can cause yeast infections in men. Similarly, diabetic men are also more susceptible to yeast infections.

Symptoms of Yeast Infections in Men
The following symptoms can be observed in case of yeast infections in men. Burning sensation at the penis, specially during an intercourse is the most prominent symptom of yeast infection. Sometimes, men may also experience a rash on other parts of the body; red patches and blisters at the head of the penis. Severe itching and pain are also some minor symptoms of yeast infections in men. Sometimes the symptoms are seen in a combination whereas, most of the time, either of the symptoms is seen. Therefore, it is recommended that if a person observes even one of the symptom, he should consult the doctor.

Treatment for Yeast Infections in Men
Yeast infections can be treated with the help of antifungal medications. However one should avoid over-the-counter drugs for yeast infection treatment. There are also certain ointments and lotions that help in treating the itchiness and irritation caused by the infection. But whatever the medications, it is always better to consult the doctor first and have the drugs only with prescription. The drugs may have certain mild side effects like allergies which can be treated. As home remedies, one can follow a diet to reduce the Candida overgrowth in the body. Foods like yogurt, garlic and cranberry juice are beneficial to reduce fungal overgrowth in human beings.

It is better to follow certain precautions for the prevention of it. One should stay away from unprotected sexual intercourse if there is a suspicion of yeast infection. It is also recommended to eat lesser amounts of fermented foods to avoid fungal overgrowth. Lastly, having a balanced diet helps in strengthening the immunity of the person, making him healthy and fit.
