Camping in Rural Australia
My dad had decided we should rough it this year and took us deep into a rural area in Australia. We drove for almost three hours without seeing anyone else on the dirt road he had turned down. Our caravan was doing okay so far on this road, mostly because it was in decent shape. One storm and we would be in trouble.
My dad chose a camping site that he thought would work for us and we spent the next few hours clearing the camp. We cleared brush for several hundred feet so there was no chance of a fire spreading, especially since it had been so dry lately. My dad started up a fire and began to cook some of the food he brought with us.
I told my dad that I thought we were supposed to be roughing it and yet we had the caravan and lots of food and drinks. That’s when I found out that we would be sleeping outside. He said the camping site would be perfect and the weather while a little cool would be perfect for outdoor camping.
My mom didn’t look to happy to hear about the outdoors part, but she knew better than to say anything to him now. We roasted some marshmallows and talked for a long time. Finally, it was time to set up our sleeping bags. As we lay in our bags with light of the fire slowing dying, I thought I could hear all kinds of strange sounds getting closer to us.
After a couple of days, we were all used to the sounds and I didn’t think I could go to sleep without them. After a great week and a half, it was time to return to civilization. We packed up our camp and made sure we left it as we found it. We can’t wait till we go camping again.
