Calle Ocho Festival Attracts Glamorous Crowd
The annual Calle Ocho Festival held in Miami each year is just around the corner. It attracts people of all ages in the Cuban community, and is sure to bring some of South Florida's Glamorous Cubans once again this year.
Each year on Calle Ocho in the part of Miami known by locals as "Little Havana," a massive party in the street occupies an entire week in March. The party kicked off this year on February 27th, and will run all the way until March 15th, which ends the event with a massive block party.
What is the dress code for Calle Ocho, you ask? Well, be casual, be hip, and be ready to party. People of all walks of life gather at the festival. People who are old enough to remember Cuban history, ones you see applying wrinkle creams before and during the event, (you know how Latin people are with cosmetics) and the likes of Fidel Castro and Celia Cruz, all the way down to their great Grandchildren. Great Cuban families like the Garcia's, the Lopez's, the Bustamante's, and the Mendez's all join in to sip Mojitos and dance to the rhythms of the music made famous by their country.
If you arrive early, you can get in the golf tournament. The shotgun start takes place at Don Shula's golf club in Miami Lakes.
Some of the other events that take place at the Calle Ocho festival include the block party. The party features over 30 stages of live entertainment. Dancing and drinking are the norm here for the crazy Cubans. It's also great time to rub elbows with some Cubans who may be able to roll cigars like they do in their native land.
As reported on another website, the festival was the scene of a Guinness World Record, as 119,986 people joined in the world’s longest conga line way back in 1988. Simply amazing!
This isn't the largest Hispanic festival in the nation for no reason, this event literally takes stage in the heart of the Cuban-Americans zone of Little Havana. South Florida Cubans and other US-residing Cubans look forward to this event each year. It is a who's-who of South Florida Cubans, so be sure to put on your white shoes, wear your favorite Guayabera, and join in the festivities in 2009.
